Summary:
Includes exterior and interior views of housing and community buildings for
employees of the atomic-bomb development project in Oak Ridge (Tenn.), designed
by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Construction was completed in
1949. Exterior views of the residential development show
plywood-and-board-clad, ranch-style houses set in a hilly, wooded terrain;
these mostly single-family houses usually have porches and basements or
crawlspaces, but some are raised on platforms. Other views show long,
frame-and-brick, two-story apartment buildings, with several units per level
arranged along open walkways. Other housing is of the mobile-home type, mounted
on wooden supports. Finally, one view shows a complex of two-story military
barracks. Boardwalks and unpaved roads connect most of the residential
structures.
Other exterior views include
institutional buildings, among them a wooden country church, a public library,
a post office, and low-rise brick-and-wood schools that show a range of awning,
casement, and hopper windows. Views of commercial structures include a
one-story shopping center, with outdoor arcades along the various parking
areas. There is also one view of a powerhouse or related utility building.
Interior views include a
plywood-clad living room, a kitchen, and a bedroom, with some furnishings also
of plywood. Interior views of the elementary school include a classroom, an art
classroom, an auditorium, and a gymnasium. Interior views of the high school
include an auditorium, a canteen, a library, a home economics classroom, and a
gymnasium. One view that shows a double-height room with fireplace might be of
a teachers' lounge. People are present in most of the photos in this job, both
exterior and interior. Photographed for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill by
Hedrich-Blessing. See HB-08878,
HB-09644, and HB-13984 for similar or related images.
