Title: Senior high school and housing in Oak Ridge (Tenn.), 1951 March 27.

            Originals:

101 negatives : b&w ; 8 x 10 in.

203 photographic prints : b&w ; 8 x 10 in.

2 transparencies : col. ; 8 x 10 in.

8 templates.

Summary: Includes exterior and interior views of the senior high school, housing, and various community buildings, designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, for employees of the U.S. government's atomic-bomb research project in Oak Ridge (Tenn.). Exterior views of the high school show a long, low-rise, brick building with ribbon windows. Some exteriors show a glazed passageway that steps down a hill from the main building to a wing that appears to include a gymnasium, industrial-arts shops, service and utility facilities. Other views include the shop/service wing with parking lot, canopy slabs that project on slender steel columns from the main and rear entrances, and the main building lit from within at night. Interior views of the high school include a gymnasium with movable wood bleachers and partitions, exposed steel beams and trusses, and drop-down basketball hoops.

Other interiors show classrooms, the library, science laboratories, and a woodworking shop. Interiors also include stairwells with flying stairs, corridors lined with lockers, exhibit cases, locker rooms, and the auditorium (whose air diffusers are prominent in some views). Other interiors include communal showers, restroom stalls, and electric service boxes. Students and/or teachers are present in many views of the high school. Exterior views of housing show a range of single-family and multiple dwellings of masonry or wood-frame construction. Views include a hillside with a series of concrete-block, flat-roofed, three-story apartment buildings with covered exterior stairways; some night views show these buildings lit from within and- frame townhouses, and concrete-block-and-frame, split-level houses on a hillside.

Other views include two-story brick-flat-roofed apartment buildings whose second floors, with vertical wood siding, cantilever out over carports. Other housing includes ranch-style, wood-and- stucco-sided bungalows, some with L-shaped plans, situated on circular or otherwise winding streets. Residential interiors show living rooms (some with outdoor balconies), bedrooms, and kitchens. Views of other community buildings include exteriors of the wood-and-stucco-sided, split-level Oak Ridge Public Library and another municipal building, also one-story and sided in wood and stucco, with a circular driveway. Another view shows a one-story shopping center, with U-shaped clusters of colonnaded stores fronting on parking lots. Other exteriors include the low-rise elementary school, with some views showing the school's sitting in the midst of a housing development.

Interior views of the elementary school include classrooms and an auditorium, with students and teachers present in some views. Another interior view shows a room of medical equipment, which might be a clinic in one of the schools. For similar or related images see HB-13984, HB-08878, and HB-09644.
