Title: Architectural models for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's entry in the Fermi competition, 1957 June 14.

            Originals:

15 negatives : b&w ; 8 x 10 in.

16 photographic prints : b&w ; 8 x 10 in.

4 transparencies : col., slides ; 35 mm.

Summary: Includes views of architectural models designed by architects for the Fermi competition. Models show variations for a centerpiece structure set in a plaza surrounded by glass-box buildings. The options include a series of closely spaced vertical columns, a starburst-type sculpture surrounded by low cylinders protruding from the plaza, and a thin-shell, vaulted structure that rests on the plaza on four points. Other views show a low building with glass walls and flat, cantilevered roof, a boxy building supported by an external space-frame structure, and a glass box with trussed roof. Further models show a marble- or travertine-clad box with reflecting pool, a pavilion with large hands projecting up on columns, and simple, low structures that resemble the surrounding context.

The Fort Dearborn Project in Chicago sponsored the competition. According to Time magazine, architect Reginald Caywood Knight won the competition. The memorial was not built. The Fort Dearborn Project was an urban renewal plan by Arthur Rubloff aimed at the east Loop and Near North areas of Chicago.
