Description of the collection:
The photographic records of the Jewish Home
for Aged (originally the Orthodox Jewish Home for Aged), founded in 1899 as an institution
to care for Orthodox Jews, were accessioned into the Chicago Historical Society
and later separated from the manuscripts which they accompanied. These manuscripts are available in the
Society's Manuscript Division. The
photographs mainly depict scenes involving the Home's residents and staff, and
they fall into three major categories:
biographic, pictures of residents, and pictures of the building. These categories are further divided into
seven series, described below. Most of
the photographs were taken after 1945; some for public relations purposes, but
others were intended to provide a history of the institution. Also included are negatives, positive prints
for an overhead projector, and glass lantern slides.
Related materials at Chicago
History Museum, Research Center, include the Jewish Home for Aged records and
the Jewish Home for Aged photographs from the 1950s and 1960s (1987.0052).
