Description of the collection:

The collection consists primarily of photographs issued by the Associated Negro Press, a news service founded in Chicago by Barnett in 1919. These photographs document the ANP's effort to cover events, trends, and personalities of national interest within black communities by supplying images to black newspapers and periodicals both in the United States and Africa. Included are publicity portraits of prominent blacks in business, politics, education, religion, sports, law, medicine, journalism, government, and entertainment. Additional ANP material consists of advertisements, cartoons, artwork for mastheads, and halftone proof sheets.

Other photographs in the collection represent Barnett's business activities. Among these are images relating to his business ventures with black cosmetic services and products such as Poro Hair and Beauty Culture and the Kashmir Chemical Company; the Supreme Liberty Life Insurance Company and the sale of photographic portraits of famous blacks in history. Views of Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, Chicago's Provident Hospital, American Red Cross Relief programs and a series of albums, part of a project of the Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which document agricultural conditions in the black rural South in the 1930s and 1940s, all reflect Barnett's varied interests and associations. A small group of photographs relate to Barnett's travels to Africa and Haiti.

Although Barnett lived most of his life in Chicago, a relatively small percentage of the collection (about five percent) relates to the city. Included are portraits of prominent Chicagoans from various fields, street scenes in the area of 35th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and a photographic essay on a racial discrimination situation at the Trumbull Park Homes in 1954. Broadsides (largest 11x14 in.) concern various political candidates (William L. Dawson, Perry C. Thompson, Oscar DePriest, Rev. Wilbur N. Daniel, Arthur W. Mitchell, an endorsement of Dawson by Mahalia Jackson, all 1930s); a Ku Klux Klan flyer (undated); international performances of Etta Moten (1930s?); the drama "Purlie Victorious" (1930s?); a rally for the Trade Union Unity League (1930); the announcement of Chicago Police Commissioner Orlando W. Wilson from Mayor Daley's office (1960); a call for post-war equal employment opportunities (1945); and a call from the United Pioneers of 1941 for "[Negro] Self-Help" (1942).

The collection is arranged by topic; an itemized container list is available. Many of the ANP photographs were accompanied by printed captions or other descriptive material. For archival purposes, these textual materials have been separated from the photographs and are now located in non-graphic file folders that correspond to the box lot arrangement. When practical, text has been transcribed onto the back of the photograph. "Sep.1 p." on the back of many photos indicates that textual material was attached to the photograph originally and is available in the non-graphic material files ("Information File Cabinet").

Organization: By topic.

Most of collection's images are photoprints.

Broadsides are described in a separate record in this online catalog.

Some photoprints also available as copy negatives in Rights & Reproductions Office ICHi no. 15096, 15097, 15102, 15104-08, 16311, 16313, 16315, 16317, 16350-52, 16318, 16320, 16321, 16323, 16331-16333, 16349, 16350, 18375, 18377-18381, 19530-19536.

Related materials at Chicago History Museum, Research Center, include the Claude A. Barnett papers, the Etta Moten Barnett papers, and microfilm of major portions of the Claude A. Barnett papers by University Publications of America (made in 1985).
