Description of the collection:
Photographs by professional photographer
Siegel of people, places and events in the Chicago area. Primarily consists of
photographs by Siegel and other photographers taken for the book, Chicago's
Famous Buildings. Includes photographic work for Chicago area
businesses--mostly individual or group portraits and corporate buildings--and
some of the published versions of that work, e.g., annual reports, tear sheets.
Also includes student photographs and transparencies from Siegel's students at
Chicago's Institute of Design. Contact sheets are from Siegel's assignments
with Time-Life publications. There is a small amount of Siegel's early work in
Detroit and his experimental photographs. One box contains photographs and
slides of Siegel, his family, students, and other images relating to his
personal life. Also includes one box of copy photoprints and slides from
material retained by Irene Siegel.
Images also available as 4 x 5 in.
copy negatives created by Chicago Historical Society at the time of the Siegel
exhibition.

Chicago in 1937 as the New Bauhaus; closed in 1938; reopened in 1939 as the
Chicago School of Design; changed name in 1944 to the Institute of Design;
