Biographic/Historical note:

Charles Harting Percy (b. September 27, 1919), known as Chuck Percy, served as United States Senator (Illinois, Republican) from 1967 to 1985. A leader in business, he became president and CEO of the media technology company Bell & Howell at age thirty and held that post from 1949 to the mid-1960's. He entered politics in the 1950s and became a well-known figure in the Republican Party. He was defeated in a campaign for Illinois Governor in 1964 but elected Senator in 1966. He was reelected to the Senate twice but lost to Paul Simon in 1984. As Senator, Percy worked on policies ranging from economics, business, and foreign relations to issues on aging, judicial appointments, low-cost housing, and nutrition. He was chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in the Ninety-seventh and Ninety-eighth Congresses. He was married to Jeanne Dickerson, who died in 1947. He later married Loraine Guyer, and they have reared five children.

Summary description of the collection:

The collection is comprised primarily of photographs relating to Charles H. Percy’s political career as a U.S. Senator (Republican, Illinois) from 1967 to 1985, including views of him campaigning; at Senate hearings; traveling abroad; interacting with staff and interns, students, constituents, and groups representing older Americans, ethnic groups, and other interests; at television appearances and interviews; attending Republican conferences, charity events, award ceremonies, economic and business conferences, and meeting with foreign leaders; as well as more casual photographs of Percy with family, in his office, or playing tennis. Includes portrait photographs of Percy with prominent politicians and leaders such as President Richard Nixon, President Jimmy Carter, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jesse Jackson, Ted Kennedy, John D. Rockefeller IV (husband of Percy's daughter Sharon), and Donald Rumsfeld, as well as with celebrities Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Redford. There are many items from the group Citizens for Percy, the Senator's principal campaign committee.

Three photographs of Richard Nixon, one with Senator Percy, are signed by the President, including one by First Lady Patricia Nixon. These items are in special storage, but copies are available with the rest of the collection. Collection also includes film reels and videotapes of television interviews, press conferences, and senate hearings. A folder of non-graphic material contains various letters, notes, stationary,etc. that accompanied the original photographic material in the original folders.

Box-PPL #13 and box-PCP #2 contain general folder titles of photographs relating to Senator Percy, most of which were created by his press office.
