Description of Collection:
Harry Daniel Murphy (1880-1973) was a political cartoonist who flourished around 1900-1930. Most of his work was for the Oregonian in Portland, Oregon, but he worked in Denver for the Rocky Mountain News in 1903-1904 and spent two years in New York before returning to Portland. Other newspapers that his cartoons appeared in were the San Francisco Examiner, The Argus, the Chicago American, the Post-Intelligencer, and the Chicago Herald & Examiner. 101 original drawings of his political cartoons for the Chicago Herald & Examiner make up the bulk of this collection. There are three scrapbooks containing newspaper and magazine clippings of his cartoons, cartoons by others cartoonists, and articles about Murphy as a cartoonist. The third scrapbook has "Honora Octavia Downing" on the inside cover and contains clippings of poems. Also included are two photograph albums with photographs probably taken on family vacations to Europe, southern California, Canada, and New England, ca. 1920s. There are 13 tablets containing pencil sketches and notes which could have been used while Murphy was a partner in the Lute Pease and Harry Murphy School of Caricature and Illustration in Portland, Oregon.
