Description of the Collection
Summary: Visual materials of the Fire Insurance Patrol (1871-1959) which was organized, supported and employees paid by the Chicago Board of Underwriters. Their purpose was to protect and save life and property in or next to burning buildings and to remove and take charge of such property. The Patrol were not firemen and did not have any relationship to the Chicago Fire Department. Subjects include demonstrations of their methods of preserving property, group and individual portraits of members of the patrols, patrol buildings, and the Eastland disaster (1915).
