Description of the Collection

Summary: Primarily original cartoons and drawings which were executed

by Hansen while he was a student at Chicago's Lane Technical High

School and later during his employ by the Chicago Daily News.

Includes comic illustrations for the school newspaper or yearbook

regarding school activities and organizations. Also includes hand

drawn and colored comic books, and illustrated short stories

generally regarding criminals and law enforcement agents. Hansen's

newspaper work consists mainly of individual cartoons regarding

politics, food, games, social customs and few series--"Smuggy,"

"Laughs & lemons," and an untitled comic strip regarding a

cartoonist, Gypsy Dix, and a hero of his artistic creation, Red Van.

The cartoon books, "Tappy the telephone" and "Memoirs of a copyboy" deal

with life in a newspaper office. A few photographs and original drawings

depict Hansen and acquaintances.
