Biographical sketch:

Ned Mc Donald Freeman was an amateur photographer who photographed Chicago's parks, the Illinois and Michigan Canal, The Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers, and Du Page County Forest Preserves in the 1920s.  He was born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1872.  Later, he was a resident of Jamaica, New York.  He moved to Chicago when he was married in 1901.  He was a trader at the Board of Trade until World War I.  During the war he worked for the Federal Trade Commission.  Later he became the personal accountant to the Henry Cross Brokerage firm.  He died in Chicago in 1940.

 

Description of the collection:

Primarily images of Chicago parks, and forest preserves and landscapes surrounding Chicago taken by amateur photographer and Chicago resident Ned Freeman. Includes scenes of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the Au Sable River and the Des Plaines River.

 

Most prints were contact-printed from small negatives. Non-graphic material consists of handwritten identification logs that have been transcribed in the container list.

 

Box 1 contains Ned Mc Donald Freeman's notebooks in which are photoprints arranged in numerical order with some of them having location descriptions on the page with them.

 

Gift of Ned McDonald Freeman's son, Alfred Freeman (1989.0651).

The Glass negatives, the Nitrate negatives, and the Photoprints in this collection are not stored together collectively.  The Glass negatives are stored in three boxes, the nitrate negatives are stored in one box, and the Photoprints are stored in four boxes.  The boxes are all arranged in the same way.  Alfred Freeman arranged his photographs in Series.  The boxes are arranged in alphabetical series order: A, B, C, E and I.  Within each series, the negatives and photoprints are arranged in numerical order.
