Biographical/historical note:
Gordon H. Coster
(1906-1988) was a commercial photographer who worked in Chicago for a major
portion of his career. He began practicing professional photography in the
early 1920s when he worked for a number of well-known photographic studios,
such as Bachrach Portrait Studio (Baltimore, Md.), before establishing a
free-lance business. During this time, his photographs were frequently
published in the Baltimore Sun newspaper. In 1929, he joined the firm of
Underwood & Underwood, a leading picture agency. Coster
primarily supplied advertising photographs for this agency's New York and
Chicago offices. One of his major Chicago clients was Marshall Field &
Company.
During the 1930s Coster began documenting labor union activities, and those
of anti-fascist and peace movements. From 1927-1936 his work was widely
exhibited in photographic salons, and he won several awards for his pictorialist work.
From 1941 to 1955, Coster was frequently commissioned by Life magazine. Notable
assignments for Life included subjects such as oil, wheat, industry, and World War
II, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Mayor Kelley's Chicago. One of his
photographs was used on the Life cover in 1943. Coster
also did freelance work for the magazines Time, Fortune, Holiday, Ladies Home
Journal and Scientific American. His work was also used in publications of the
following corporations: Allstate Insurance Company (Home and Highway),
Simplicity (Modern Miss), International Minerals and Chemicals, Dramatic
Publishing Company, and the architecture firm of Perkins and Will.
Gordon Coster
taught photography at the Institute of Design (Chicago, Ill.) in 1946, 1950-51,
and in 1960. He was solicited by Edward Steichen to join a group of
photographers who were documenting World War II for the U.S. Navy. Later, in
1955, Steichen also selected Coster's work for
inclusion in "The Family of Man," a landmark exhibition at the Museum
of Modern Art in New York.
Today, Coster's
work is viewed as representative of the development of pictorialist,
documentary and early modernist movements in photography.

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:
Part1-Series 1 contains
black-and-white photoprint material, including contact prints. This group is
roughly classified by topic using broad level headings from the Library of
Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (LCTGM). The same topical organization
was applied to Part 2-Series 1 as well. However, at the end of Part 2-Series 1
there are mounted photographs by Coster (box 29 &
30) and photographs made by other photographers and a few special format items
(box 31).
The rest of the black-and-white
photoprints are divided among Part 1-Series 2 (11 x 14 in. photoprints), Part1-Series
3 (photoprints by others), Part1-Series 4 (card photographs), Part 1-Series 10-1
(Coster's early photoprints), and Part 1-Series 12.
The series containing Coster's early work (Part1-Series 10-2 and Series 10-3)
hold, respectively, glass plates and film negatives believed to be nitrate,
dating from 1920 to 1930.
Black-and-white flexible film
negatives are found in Part1-Series 5 (8 x 10 in. negatives), Part1-Series 6 (5
x 7 to 4 x 5 in. negatives) and Part1-Series 7 (35 mm and 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 strip
negatives). Where possible the negatives have been reorganized by Coster's numbers from the original negative sleeves. This
is particularly so for the larger formats (8 x 10 in., 5 x 7 in., and 4 x 5
in.). The strip negatives are relatively unorganized, that is, they are
basically the way they arrived at the Chicago Historical Society.
There is a box of
black-and-white negatives in Part 2-Series 3 containing 1,200
negatives (8 x 10 in. box).
Part 1-Series 8 (slides and
transparencies) and lantern slides have had some topical headings or proper
names noted on the containers.
Part 2 contains materials from
the second accession: 1993.0029: Series 1. Photoprints (b&w.),
Series 2. Color photoprints, Series 3. Negatives, Series 4. Color
transparencies and slides, Series 5. Moving image material.
Original storage notes: Part
1: box lot (108 boxes of photoprints, 4 boxes of card photographs); 122 boxes
of negatives (PN-0108-0214, GN-0261-0265,
NN-0013-0122); 30 boxes of slides & transparencies (CT-0098-0127); 10 boxes
of lantern slides (LS); 1 folder of color photoprints (CP-0093); 1 box of
non-graphic material (NG); 1 flat-file photograph (PFL). Part 2: boxes 10 8 x
10 in.; 23 11 x 14 in; 5 16 x 20 in.
