Description of the collection
Includes photographs from the Chicago Journal: The South Side's Free Weekly
Newspaper, a neighborhood newspaper in Chicago (Ill.). Includes images of the
city's south side, such as residential streets, public housing, and businesses.
Includes images of the Douglas, Hyde Park, and Pullman communities. Many
photographs show people, often involved in some activity. People include
politicians, entertainers, activists, and educators among others. Most images
relate to newsworthy events, such as social events, organizations' events,
crimes, demonstrations, and political activities. Some photographs show police
at work. Some photographs show African Americans and relate to racial
discrimination. Also includes material on recycling garbage, sports, streets
(notably, Maxwell Street market), and transportation.
