The collection contains 201 photographs made in Chicago by Camilo José Vérgara as part of a larger body of work by Vergara entitled The New American Ghetto Archive, which documents some of the poorest and most segregated urban communities in the United States, including neighborhoods in Chicago, New York City, Camden, Los Angeles, Detroit, Gary and Newark. The 201 Chicago images are represented by 201 large cibachrome prints and corresponding transparencies and reference photoprints (4 x 6 in.). Also present are 315 Chicago photoprints (4 x 6 in.) by Vérgara not represented as transparencies or cibachrome prints. Includes street scenes, views from rooftops, views of buildings, and a few informal portraits of people in several Chicago neighborhoods, primarily African American, including views of churches, public housing projects (including Cabrini-Green, Henry Horner Homes, Stateway Gardens, Robert Taylor Homes), outdoor murals, former hotels and abandoned businesses primarily on the West Side and the South Side of Chicago and a few sites in Robbins, Illinois.

The cibachrome prints in the collection are identified by the letter a in the accession number (1a-201a), the transparencies are identified by the letter b in the accession number (1b-201b) and the reference prints are identified by the letter c in the accession number (1c-201c). The images, which are described in this container list for 1a-201a (boxes 2-6) correspond to 1b-201b and 1c-201c.

The artist’s numbers for these images in The New American Ghetto Archive also are marked on the verso of the prints and transparencies but have not been used for identification purposes at the Chicago Historical Society.

Box 1 also contains 315 additional reference prints of the other photographs Vérgara made in Chicago for the New American Ghetto Archive, but these are not a part of the Society’s permanent collection. The New American Ghetto Archive identification numbers are marked on the verso of these prints.
