Summary description of the collection:

This collection includes photographs related to the George M. Pullman family and his descendants, primarily through the lineage of Florence Lowden Miller, granddaughter of George M. Pullman and daughter of Illinois Governor Frank Orren Lowden. It also includes materials related to the Pebbles family, the ancestors of Dr. Charles Phillip Miller, husband of Florence Lowden Miller.

Early items in the collection include many studio portrait photographs of George M. Pullman and his wife Harriet Sanger Pullman, as well as of their children Florence, Harriet, George M., Jr., and Walter. Other photographs include many individual and family group portraits; interior and exterior views of Castle Rest on Pullman Island in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Alexandria Bay, New York; the Pullman residence “Fairlawn” in Elberon, New Jersey; and interior and exterior views of Pullman railroad cars.

Twentieth-century photographs related to the Frank Orren Lowden family include numerous family albums including photoprints and cabinet card photographs of the Lowden children (George, Florence, Harriet and Frances) as children, teenagers, and adults, including their weddings and spouses and their children. This extended family is composed of Lowden, Madlener, Drake, and Miller families. Other Lowden photographs include interior and exterior photographs of the Governor’s mansion in Springfield, Illinois; Sinnissippi Farm in Oregon, Illinois; and the many national and international travels of Florence Sanger Pullman Lowden and Frank Orren Lowden.

The collection includes a large number of photographs of the Miller family, including views from their travels, both nationally and internationally. Mrs. Miller was a noted philanthropist, and she is shown at many events accepting awards or commendations. Also present are photographs of physician, Dr. C. Phillip Miller and his colleagues in the field of medical pathology; the Miller residence at 5757 Kimbark Avenue near the University of Chicago; and many snapshots of the Miller children, Phillip Lowden Miller and Warren Pullman Miller.

Materials about Dr. Miller's relatives in the Pebbles family include images of the Alonzo Warren Pebbles family homes in Oak Park (Ill.) and at Lake Marie (Antioch, Ill.); portraits painted by the artist Frank Marion Pebbles; and assorted photographs related to the Reed and Tingley families, relatives of the Pebbles.

Many identifications of images were made by Florence Lowden Miller (Mrs. C. Phillip Miller).

Biographical note:

Industrialist George Mortimer Pullman founded the Pullman Palace Car Company. Florence Sanger Pullman Lowden, daughter of George Mortimer Pullman, married Illinois Governor Frank Orren Lowden in 1896. Florence Lowden Miller, daughter of Frank Orren Lowden and Florence Sanger Pullman Lowden, married Dr. Charles Phillip Miller in 1931. Family members include George and Harriet Pullman and their children George, Jr., Walter, Harriet (Schermerhorn), and Florence (Lowden); Florence and Frank O. Lowden and their children George, Harriet, Frances, and Florence (Miller); Florence and Dr. C. Phillip Miller and their children Warren and Phillip.

Dr. C. Phillip Miller was a descendant of the Samuel Pebbles family (or "Peebles" as it was called until 1856, when the spelling was changed). Mr. Miller’s grandfather, Alonzo Warren Pebbles, owned a paint store and was a prominent citizen in Oak Park, Illinois
