Brief history:
Founded in 1999 by photojournalists, artists, and commercial photographers, Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers (CAAAP) is committed to fostering excellence among African American professional and non-professional photographers in the Chicagoland area. Its aim is to promote awareness of the African American community through photo-documentation projects, such as The Journey, educational programming, exhibitions, publications, and lectures. CAAAP conceived of The Journey in an effort to reverse what it saw as consistently negative portrayal of the African American community in the news media.
Description of the
collection:
Photographs (regular and digital prints) by more than 70 members of the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers (CAAAP), produced as part of a photo-documentary project entitled: The Journey: The Next 100 Years, initiated in 2000 by CAAAP. This collaborative project brought together local photographers to create a record of the African American community in Chicago at the turn of the 21st century. The collection depicts themes: The Arts, Challenges, Brothers, Sisters, the Next Generation, Faith, Family, and the Streets.
