Maps of Individual Chicago Community Areas in the Maps Collection at Chicago History Museum

by Dorothy V. Ramm, 2011

In the Abakanowicz Research Center, please request a map by its author/title, its number (if there is one), and its storage folder name.

The titles of the storage folders all begin with "Communities--" followed by the name of a community area.

Oakwoods Cemetery" has been corrected to "Oak Woods Cemetery" in this list.

This is a collection of maps relating to one or more neighborhoods, subdivisions and "additions to the city," or Chicago Community Areas and sometimes extending into surrounding areas beyond Chicago in Cook County and northern Indiana. Some maps relate to more than one area, and that information is listed in the finding aid. Titles, and subtitle information in the Summary notes, are transcribed from the maps. Maps often show subdivision of areas into lots and often relate to real estate promotion and sales. Streets, railroad lines, parks, and other local features often are indicated. Maps may relate to an area before or after its annexation to Chicago. Maps sometimes include insets showing the relationship of an area to the whole city of Chicago or to the Loop.

In addition to the geographical names in folder titles, maps relate to the following areas: Argo, Summit, Oakland, Worth, Grand Crossing, Bremen, Thornton, Lake County (Ind.), Indian Ridge, Irondale, Grayland, Jefferson, Leyden, Lyons, Evanston (Ill.), Buena Park, Pine Grove, Bleecker's Subdivision, Streeterville, Turner Park, , Cleaverville, Kensington Heights, Lincoln Avenue Gardens, Birchwood Beach, Cheltenham, Stickney, Palos, Lemont, Orland, Rich, Bloom, East Chicago (Ind.), Hammond (Ind.), South Park. Please consult the online finding aid to identify the map(s) related to each area.
