Cook County Maps at the Chicago History Museum

In the Abakanowicz Research Center, please request a map by its author/title, category, date, and its number (if there is one).

This is a collection of maps relating to Cook County, Illinois, or the area that was to become Cook County, Illinois. Some maps include insets of more than one time period and this is indicated in the Contents note. Titles, and subtitle information in the Contents notes, are transcribed from the maps. Maps often show specific townships within Cook County. Maps often show subdivision of areas into lots and often relate to real estate promotion and sales. Streets, railroad lines, parks, and other local features often are indicated. Maps may relate to an area before or after its annexation to Cook County.

In addition to the geographical names in folder titles, maps relate to the following categories: annexations and accretions, aviation, bicycles, bridges, buses, Century of Progress world’s fair, Chicago, Forest Preserve District of Cook County, government surveys, highways and roads, historical and pictorial, Illinois, industries, institutions, parking, parks, political and administrative, population and sociology, portage, postal, prehistory and geology, railroads, real estate, recreation, river and harbor, topography, transportation, wards, and waterworks and sanitation. Please consult the online finding aid to identify the map(s) related to each category.
