Illinois County Maps at the Chicago History Museum

In the Abakanowicz Research Center, please request a map by its author/title, category, date, and its number (if there is one).

This is a collection of maps relating to counties in Illinois. Some maps include insets of more than one time period and this is indicated in the Contents note. Titles, and subtitle information in the Contents notes, are transcribed from the maps. Maps often show specific townships within counties. Maps often show subdivision of areas into lots and often relate to census, real estate promotion and sales. Streets, railroad lines, parks, and other local features often are indicated. Maps may relate to an area before or after its annexation to these counties. A history of county boundaries in the United States is provided by the Newberry Library: http://publications.newberry.org/ahcbp/.

In addition to the geographical names in folder titles, maps relate to the following categories: annexations and accretions, bicycles, bridges, buses, government surveys, highways and roads, historical and pictorial, Illinois, industries, institutions, parking, parks, political and administrative, population and sociology, portage, railroads, real estate, recreation, topography, transportation, waterways, and waterworks and sanitation. Please consult the online finding aid to identify the map(s) related to each category.

Related Material: See collection titled “City of Chicago Maps” for maps relating to the city of Chicago, Illinois, collection titled “Cook County Maps” for maps relating only to Cook County, Illinois, and collection titled “Cook and Adjacent Counties Maps” for maps relating to Cook and adjacent counties in Illinois.

Township No. 27 North of the base line Range No. 13 West of the 2nd pl. Meridian

Ill. Counties Iroquois 1822

William Rector (surveyor)

S. Harrison (Acting Commissioner for the General Land Office, who certified authenticity of this copy.)

Moses H. Messer

(author of appended notes)

18.25" x 24.25" (map)

A certified copy of the plat of a township in Iroquois County, with four handwritten letters. The map marks sections, areas of timber, waterways, and a Trading House. It is certified by Wm. Rector, Nov. 12, 1822.

Attached to the top left corner is a letter from the Department of the Interior, General Land Office, certifying the map as an accurate photolithographic copy of the original plat. It is signed and sealed by S. Harrison, Acting Commissioner, and is dated August 22nd, 1884.

The unattached letter is a receipt from Harrison to M.H. Messer for the sale of the certified copy of the plat.

Attached at the bottom left corner of the map is a note dated Jan. 10th 1894 from Moses H. Messer, saying that the "trading house" marks the location of the American Fur Company trading post where Gurdon S. Hubbard was stationed in the winter of 1821 and 1822. Messer believes this settles the controversy among historians about the location of the trading post.

Attached to the back of the map is a note (Jan 11th, 1894) from Messer to the president of the Chicago Historical Society, presenting the map (and evidence of trading post location), as he had promised Mr. Mason, but had delayed sending due to ill health. Messer requests membership to the Chicago Historical Society, as previously discussed, if the society considers him worthy.
