Biographical/historical note:

James Franklin Aldrich, who became a prominent Chicago politician and businessman, was born at Two Rivers, Wisconsin, on April 6, 1853. His father was William Aldrich. In April 1861, his family moved to Chicago, where Aldrich attended a public school and then the University of Chicago. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1877. He engaged in the manufacture of linseed oil and later in the gas business.

Aldrich, who was sometimes called "J. Frank" Aldrich, served as a member of the Cook County (Ill.) Board of Commissioners from 1886-1888, and served as president of the board in 1887. He was also a member of the county board of education in 1887 and the commissioner of public works of Chicago from May 1, 1891, to January 1, 1893. He was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth U.S. Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1897) but was not a candidate for renomination in 1896. In 1897, he unsuccessfully attempted to be appointed U.S. Minister to Belgium. However, he was appointed consul general at Havana, Cuba, in 1897, although he did not reach his post due to the sinking of the battleship Maine and the subsequent war with Spain. Aldrich was a receiver of national banks and a railroad appraiser from 1898 until 1923. He died in Chicago on March 8, 1933; interment at Rosehill Cemetery.
