Historical note:

The Central Council on Nursing Education was formed ca. 1920 and was made up of representatives of Chicago area nursing schools, nursing organizations, hospitals' women's auxiliaries, and others. The organization sought to improve educational standards in schools of nursing. In 1946, the organization became part of the newly formed Chicago Council on Community Nursing (CCCN) and broadened its scope to include private and public nursing agencies in the greater Chicago area. Other functions of the CCCN included coordination and planning of services, promotion of the nursing profession, awarding scholarships and grants for the study of nursing, and vocational training.

 

Summary description of the collection:

Correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, financial reports, policies and procedures, academic papers, speeches, training materials, newspaper clippings, and other records of the Chicago Council on Community Nursing (CCCN) and its predecessor, the Central Council on Nursing Education. Most of the collection pertains to the council's work improving educational standards for nursing, as well as popularizing the nursing profession.

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. Central Council on Nursing Education materials, 1919-1949 (box 1-2)

Series 1 consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, budget reports, certificates, academic papers, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and other records of the Central Council on Nursing Education, predecessor to the Chicago Council on Community Nursing. Also present are materials pertaining to the council's annual luncheons, including pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and speeches.

 

Series 2. Board meeting minutes, 1946-1971 (box 2-3)

Series 2 contains board meeting minutes of the CCCN. Included are minutes of the council's inaugural meeting in 1946.

 

Series 3. Administrative files, 1946-1971 (box 4-7)

Series 3 consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, budget reports, policies and procedures, and other administrative records of the CCCN. Also present are speeches, mainly given by medical professionals, from the council's annual luncheons.

 

Series 4. General materials, 1950-1971 (box 7-8)

Series 4 contains training manuals, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, history of nursing, and questionnaires. Also present are copies of the Illinois League for Nursing newsletter, information on the Practical Nursing Program, and a reel-to-reel audio tape of an April 5, 1970, appearance by representatives of the CCCN on the Virginia Gale Show.
