Description of the collection:

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, financial and fund raising records concerning the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago's efforts to promote racial justice within the Archdiocese of Chicago (Ill.), the Roman Catholic Church, and in society in general. CIC was established in 1948. Topics include specific instances of racial discrimination in Chicago churches, schools, housing, hospitals, and other agencies and in employment. Correspondents include council officers Lloyd Davis, John A. McDermott, and R. Sargent Shriver.

Includes sound recordings relating to the activities of the CIC, 1964-1967.

Provenance statement:

Most of the collection was a gift of Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago beginning in 1969. The sound recordings were a gift of Marquette University Archives (1989.0591).

This collection was processed initially with the assistance of a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Title II-C Program, 1993-1994.
