Biographical/historical note:

The Chicago Woman's Musical Club was founded in 1914 to develop a higher standard of musical appreciation and culture and to provide proper venues for musical performances in Chicago. Members were women and students from throughout Chicago and the surrounding area. The club organized numerous concerts, luncheons, and provided scholarships to young musicians.

 

Summary description of the collection:

Newspaper clippings, programs, newsletters, sheet music, music periodicals, correspondence, administrative files, annual directories, scrapbooks, and other records of the Chicago Woman's Musical Club, which sponsored performances of classical music for its members (often at the Fine Arts Building) and at larger venues for larger audiences; fostered music appreciation; awarded scholarships to young musicians and prizes; and raised funds to support its programs. The administrative files include reports and meeting minutes. Also present are member classifications listings. Newspaper clippings include performance announcements, reviews, and biographies of musicians. Includes a 1915 final exam from the Chicago Musical College.

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. General materials, 1905-1974 (box 1-2)

Series 1 consists of programs (1915-1974), sheet music, membership material, receipts, invitations, meeting notices, election ballots, performance flyers, song lyrics, and newspaper and magazine clippings). Membership material consists of member classification and status listings, member applications (1944-1946), and membership cards. Also present are scholarship contestant applications, announcements, and audition reports (1952-1966) and a Chicago Musical College final exam (1914).

 

Series 2. Annual reports and meeting minutes, 1921-1950 (box 3)

Series 2 consists of annual reports of the Chicago Woman's Musical Club officers and board of directors (1942-1950), treasurer reports (1937-1940), and meeting minutes (1921-1938, 1940-1950). Topics include finances, club events, CWMC constitution revisions, elections, and committee activities.

 

Series 3. Annual directories, 1914-1979 (box 4)

Series 3 consists of Chicago Woman's Musical Club annual directories, which include information regarding officers, directors, committees, performances, standing rules, membership, and student departments. Each directory includes the CWMC articles of incorporation and by-laws.

 

Series 4. Scrapbooks, 1914-1962 (box 5-7)

Series 4 consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings regarding scholarships, contest announcements, photographs, biographies, reviews, and awards. Also included are concert and luncheon programs, member letters, lyrics, election ballots, and copies of the CWMC newsletter Knapp's Kolumn.

 

Series 5. Sheet music and musical periodicals, 1895-1948 (box 8-10)

Series 5 consists of sheet music and periodicals. Periodicals include the National Federation of Music Clubs bulletin (1925), Music Club Magazine (1932, 1948), The Musical Digest (1925, 1947), The Etude (1895, 1924), The Music Room (1917), Musical Leader (1946, 1949), National Music Monthly (1917), Chicago Musical Times (1897) and Roma (1911). Many of the publications include reviews, performance schedules, general music news, and biographies of musicians.
