The Teen Council was largely responsible for developing survey
questions which sought to distinguish generations by historical events, mores,
customs, and styles in order to provide comparisons of universal experiences of
growing up and individual stories. Survey questions were organized under these
themes: setting and period, family and culture, school, work, style and popular
culture, leisure time, maturation and identity and reflective questions.
The Teen Chicago oral history collection provided the basis for a
website, for an exhibition at Chicago Historical Society/Chicago History Museum
from April 2004 to April 2005 (which won an American Association of Museums
award), and for 10 public programs for teenagers held at the Museum. Museum
staff member, Marie Scatena, was project director.
Description of the
collection:
The collection contains
original sound recordings of the ca. 100 interviews with men and women (on 184
