Description of the project:

The Teen Chicago Project was a multi-year initiative expanding teenage involvement at Chicago Historical Society (now known as Chicago History Museum). It involved current teenagers with older members of the community by enabling both groups to examine what it meant to be a teenager during each decade of the 20th century. The 100 interviews collected by the project members created historical source material about childhood and adolescence and provided the youthful perspective of the interviewers at the beginning of the 21st century.

A fifteen member Teen Council hired and trained as part of the project, conducted the interviews between October 2003 and January 2004. Interviews were sixty to ninety minutes in length and were collected either at the Museum or in the field by Teen Council members working in pairs or groups of three. The eldest interviewee was 101 years old at the time of the interview, and the youngest interviewee was 15 years old. Among those interviewed are internationally known oral historian Studs Terkel, author Jodee Blanco, and hip-hop artist Kanye West.

The Teen Council was largely responsible for developing survey questions which sought to distinguish generations by historical events, mores, customs, and styles in order to provide comparisons of universal experiences of growing up and individual stories. Survey questions were organized under these themes: setting and period, family and culture, school, work, style and popular culture, leisure time, maturation and identity and reflective questions.

The Teen Chicago oral history collection provided the basis for a website, for an exhibition at Chicago Historical Society/Chicago History Museum from April 2004 to April 2005 (which won an American Association of Museums award), and for 10 public programs for teenagers held at the Museum. Museum staff member, Marie Scatena, was project director.

Description of the collection:

The collection contains original sound recordings of the ca. 100 interviews with men and women (on 184 cassettes); listening copies of the cassettes; typed transcripts for most interviews with related documentation; and archival records of the project. Interviewees were teenagers growing up in Chicago or its suburbs during these decades: 1910’s: 1 person; 1920’s: 5 persons; 1930’s: 12 persons; 1940’s: 22 persons; 1950’s: 16 persons; 1960’s: 15 persons; 1970’s: 11 persons; 1980’s: 6 persons; 1990’s: 9 persons; 2000’s: 4 persons.

The collection is divided into five series.

Series 1: Project Overview (box 1 folde 1)

Series  2: Interview Transcripts and Notes (boxes 1-6)

Series 3: Listening audio cassette copies (60 minute cassettes) (audio boxes 1-7

Series 4: Original sound cassettes of interviews (Closed to researchers) (audio boxes 8-13)

Series 5. Archival Project Files (Closed to researchers) (boxes 7-8)

Series 1 contains brochures, news clippings, and other materials by or about the project to provide an overview. Series 2. contains the transcripts (partial or complete) and sometimes supplemental materials for each interview. Series 3 is composed of listening copies of the recorded interviews. However, some interviews were not recorded. Series 4 contains original cassettes of the interviews, and Series 5 contains archival project files, including electronic copies of transcripts in Microsoft Word, copies of release forms, and correspondence between interviewees and Museum staff members.
