Historical note:

The Economic Club of Chicago, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization, was established in 1927 to promote the exchange of ideas among business and civic leaders and to foster the development of future executives. The club was founded by Lucius Teter and originally made up of a group of elite Chicago businessmen and emerging leaders. The club provided a forum for discussion and debate on finance, economics, politics, and other current issues, and their impact on the city of Chicago. Speakers at luncheons, dinners, and other events sponsored by the club have included prominent businessmen, politicians, historians, journalists, educators, and others, such as Herbert Hoover, Nelson A. Rockefeller, John F. Kennedy, Donald Rumsfeld, Lee Iacocca, and Richard J. Daley.

 

Summary description of the collection:

Meeting minutes, reports, clippings, correspondence, press releases, programs, speeches, membership lists and directories, and other records of the Economic Club of Chicago, an organization for discussion and debate whose membership consists of established and emerging business and civic leaders. Guest speakers over the years included nationally prominent businessmen, politicians, educators, and others. The majority of the collection pertains to forums, luncheons, and other events hosted by the club, including biographies of guest speakers, correspondence, programs, and newspaper clippings. Also present are materials related to the club's formation, administration, membership, and publicity.

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. Executive committee meeting minutes, 1928-1979 (box 1-2)

Series 1 consists of photocopies of executive committee meeting minutes, including treasurer's reports, and membership and forums committee reports. Topics include event planning and recommendations for membership; biographies of candidates for membership are present. Materials are arranged chronologically.

 

Series 2. Newspaper clippings, 1927-1969 (box 2-3)

Series 2 contains photocopies of newspaper clippings and magazine articles pertaining to club activities, guest speakers, and current events. Some materials were published for purposes of publicity. Materials are arranged chronologically.

 

Series 3. Program files, 1982-2004 (box 3-30)

Series 3 contains programs, agendas, invitations, tickets, press releases, biographies of guest speakers, speeches, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other records pertaining to forums, luncheons, and other events sponsored by the Economic Club of Chicago. Also present are membership lists (1997-2004) and directories (1990-1993, 1996-2000), and records of the reception committee. Materials are arranged chiefly by program year and consist primarily of photocopies.

 

Series 4. Correspondence, 1927-1928 (box 31-32)

Series 4 contains photocopies of correspondence. Topics include the formation of the Economic Club of Chicago, membership, and dues.

 

Series 5. Administrative material, 1927-1999 (bulk 1927-1936) (box 33-36)

Series 5 contains photocopies of meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, membership lists, templates, reports, and other administrative records of the Economic Club of Chicago. Included are materials pertaining to the board of directors; the economic changes, forums, and nominating committees; membership topics, including recommendations and applications for membership, acceptances, declinations, and resignations; and prospective guest speakers.
