Ninian Edwards, son of Benjamin and Margaret (Beall) Edwards, was born on the Edwards’s farm, “Mount Pleasant,” in Montgomery County, Maryland, on March 17, 1775. He attended private schools and graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle (Pennsylvania) in 1792. At one time, he was tutored by William Wirt, who was Attorney General of the U.S. from 1817-1829.
Edwards moved with his parents to Beardstown, Kentucky, in 1795. He was an elected member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1796-1797. He was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in 1798, commencing practice in Russellville, Kentucky, and to the Tennessee Bar in 1799. In Kentucky, Edwards served as Judge of the General Court, 1803; Judge of the Circuit Court, 1804; Presidential Elector on the Jefferson/Clinton Democratic ticket of 1804; Judge of the Court of Appeals, 1806; Chief Justice of the State, 1808.
In 1809, President Madison appointed Edwards Governor of the Illinois Territory, an office he held until 1818. During this period he also functioned as ex officio Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He was elected to the U. S. Senate from Illinois in 1818 and again in 1819, serving from December 3, 1818 until March 4, 1824, when he resigned to accept an appointment as United States Minister to Mexico. He was obliged to resign this appointment, in turn, as a result of his unsubstantiated charges against Treasury Secretary William H. Crawford.
Edwards then resumed his legal practice in Belleville, Illinois, and was also interested in saw and gristmills and other mercantile pursuits. He was elected Governor of the State of Illinois in 1826, serving until 1830, when he did not stand for reelection. He was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Representative from Illinois in 1832. Edwards generally resided in and around Kaskaskia, Illinois, from 1809 to 1818 and in Edwardsville, Illinois, from 1818 until 1824. In 1824 he settled in Belleville, where he died of cholera at the age of 58 on July 20, 1833. He was interred at Belleville, but his body was moved to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, in 1855. He was married to Elvira Lane in 1803. Five children, two daughters and three sons, the most prominent of whom was Ninian Wirt Edwards, were born to them.
The papers are chiefly comprised of letters received by Ninian Edwards and a few written by him about Illinois, Kentucky, and national politics and government. Factional and individual political conflicts plus local and national elections and administrations receive considerable attention. A goodly number of items concern the Wabash Saline and Indian affairs, particularly involving the Potawatomis. Smaller lots are relative to the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War, 1832. U.S. presidential elections 1824-1832 and Illinois gubernatorial elections 1826-1830 are extensively treated along with the administrations of presidents Monroe, Adams, and Jackson.
Many items are reproduced in whole or in part in 3 publications.
1. "The Edwards Papers," edited by Elihu B. Washburne, Chicago, 1884 (F37BD E2e.)
This volume contains reproductions of, and editorial commentary on, approximately one-third of the items among the Edwards papers at the Chicago Historical Society. Its index is useful.
2. "History of Illinois from 1778 to 1833," by his son Ninian W. Edwards; and "Life and Times of Ninian Edwards," also by his son Ninian W. Edwards, Springfield, Ill., 1870 (F37BD E2). Many of William Wirt’s letters are reproduced herein.
3. "The Governors’ Letter-Books 1818-1834," edited with introduction and notes by Everts Butell Greene and Clarence Walworth Alvord, Springfield, Ill., 1909 (F37A I2c v. 4). These works contain Edwards letters that are not among those in the manuscript collection at the Chicago Historical Society.
In addition to their general political significance, the Kentucky papers (chiefly 1798-1809, but also scattered through the collection) include several letters by William Wirt and others on the Burr Conspiracy and James Wilkinson; and a few by Henry Clay on business matters involving his father-in-law, Colonel Thomas Hart.
Among the papers of the Illinois Territorial period (1809-1818) are materials on the administration of the Wabash Saline, American Indian affairs, particularly concerning the Potawatomis, and of the Shadrach Bond, William Clark, Daniel P. Cook, William Eustis, Albert Gallatin, James Monroe, John Pope, and William Wirt are prominent.
The papers during Edwards’ tenure as U. S. Senator (1818-1824) particularly concern the 1824 presidential election, especially as involving John C. Calhoun and William H. Crawford. Edwards’ appointment as Minister to Mexico, his conflict with Crawford, and the 1820 presidential election are also treated. Letters of John C. Calhoun, Daniel F. Cook, Samuel D. Ingham, Rufus King, James Monroe, John Reynolds, and William Wirt are also present.
The remaining papers (1825-1833) include data on the 1828 and 1832 presidential elections and on the Illinois Gubernatorial races of 1826 and 1830. Particular concern is with William Kinney, Elias Kent Kane, John McLean, and John Reynolds. Letters from Hooper Warren relative to the publication of the pro-Edwards newspaper, the "Galena Advertiser," are present, along with a few Black Hawk War items. Letters of David Jewett Baker, Sidney Breese, Daniel P. Cook, Alexander Pope Field, George Forquer, Duff Green, John McLean, John Reynolds, Joseph M. Street, Hooper Warren, and William Wirt are significant during these years.
Subject entries are given for the collection as a whole and for selected items. Added entries, merely listing dates of letters are made for all authors and recipients of correspondence listed in this descriptive inventory. However, letters by and to the following are individually catalogued in the card catalog: John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, William Henry Harrison, Samuel Houston, James Madison, James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, and Daniel Webster.
Subject entries are also given for these individually catalogued letters. However, subject entries were not made for these individually catalogued items, when they would have duplicated entries made for the collection as a whole.
Two subject-entry lists follow: the first is for the collection considered as a whole, the second for selected items and individually catalogued items.
