Historical
note:
Englewood
Hospital that served the South Side of Chicago for nearly a hundred years was
founded in 1894 as Englewood Union Hospital and was located at 426 West 69th
Street. The original objective was to treat basic illness and to train nurses
and interns. Over the next four years the hospital moved four times. It
occupied, in order, 6642 Wentworth Avenue, 712 W. 65th Street, and 840 W. 64th
Street.
In
1904 the hospital was reorganized as Englewood Hospital and Training School.
Then in 1905, Englewood consolidated with the Swedish American Hospital
Association, keeping Swedish American Hospital Association as the corporate
name, and Englewood Hospital as the popular name. After this, a new facility
was erected at West 60th Street and South Green Street, where it remained until
the 1980s. The Englewood Hospital Association, a "not-for-profit"
organization, was chartered in 1909. In April of the same year, the Swedish
American Hospital Association, a stock company, voted to sell complete interest
to Englewood Hospital Association.
In
1969, Englewood Hospital, apparently due to financial problems, merged with St.
George Hospital Corporation. The St. George Hospital Corporation contained St.
George's Hospital, Palos Community Hospital, and Englewood Hospital.
In
1978, Englewood Community Hospital Corporation was able to reestablish
Englewood Hospital outside of St. George Hospital Corporation. Englewood
Hospital then remained independent until its closing in 1988.
Englewood
Hospital's primary service area included Englewood, Ogden Park, and Auburn
Park. Its secondary service area included Roseland, Grand Crossing, Jackson
Park and the Stockyards. Among the factors that contributed to the general
decline in Englewood Hospital are a decrease in area population, a
deteriorating physical facility, and a problem receiving reimbursement from
Public Aid.
Summary description of the
collection:
Administrative
records of Englewood Hospital Association (later known as the Englewood Community
Hospital Corporation) in Chicago (Ill.), including minutes of the board of
directors and minutes of the St. George Hospital Corporation which absorbed
Englewood Hospital between 1969 and 1978; incoming and some outgoing
administrative correspondence; financial records; committee and departmental
meeting minutes and other records; newspaper clippings and newsletters. These
records document the corporate and medical staff operation of the hospital, but
do not include individual patient records. A large gap exists in the corporate
information ca. 1957-1969; corporate records after 1977 are sketchy and
incomplete, consisting mainly of incoming correspondence without providing an
overview of financial problems the hospital was encountering.
For
many years the hospital operated as a training center for nurses and as a
charitable institution, but eventually it had difficulty securing reimbursement
from Public Aid. Located at West 60th Street and South Green Street in the
Englewood neighborhood, the hospital primarily served the Englewood, Ogden
Park, and Auburn Park communities and secondarily Roseland, Grand Crossing,
Jackson Park, and the Stockyards district.

Series 1. History (box 1)
This
series consists of background information on the original founding of, and
subsequent changes made in, Englewood Hospital up to 1937. It also contains the
constitution and bylaws of the hospital corporation, the history of the
associated women's auxiliary, various "in memoriam" for deceased
board members, and a life membership roster through 1941.
Series 2. Corporate records (box
1-13)
This
series contains records of the corporate and administrative bodies of Englewood
Hospital. It has been broken into two subseries that cover specific areas of
interest.
Subseries
1, Corporate minutes and correspondence, 1909 to 1987, contains the minutes of
the Board of Trustees/Directors. There is a complete run from 1909 to 1957.
After this there is a considerable gap, resuming again in 1976 and continuing
until 1980. Some of this period can be augmented by the St. George Hospital
Corporation Board of Trustees minutes, which cover 1969 through 1978. Also
included in this subseries are accreditation and licensing correspondence,
general hospital administrative correspondence, and correspondence concerning
the construction of a new facility. The correspondence concerns varied topics
but is fairly sketchy and mostly incoming letters. Also included in this series
are copies of the newsletters generated by Englewood Hospital,
"Kaleidoscope," and "Pulse."
Subseries
2, Finances, 1913 to 1986, contains financial audits and statements, and
treasurer's reports. It also contains the minutes of the Audit, Finance, and
Insurance Committee; Insurance policies held by the hospital and related
incoming correspondence; and general ledgers from 1985 to 1987.
Series 3. Committee and departmental
records (box 14-24)
This
series consists entirely of minutes and other records generated by the various
medical departments and committees of Englewood Hospital. While it contains a
fairly complete run of medical staff meeting records from 1909 to 1987, the
departmental and committee meeting minutes are more complete for the 1970s and
1980s. Up to this time, any departmental or committee business was handled
within the general staff meetings. Contained within the committee and
departmental records are minutes of meetings, correspondence, and sample forms related to topics that are discussed, and case
studies where applicable. These records give a fairly clear view of the types
of cases seen and the general practices of the medical staff at Englewood
Hospital.
Series 4. Topical files (box
25-26)
This
series consists of those records and correspondence that are relevant to the
hospital in general but do not fit into the previous series. Included in this
series are analyses of hospital service, quality of care reports, and medical
staff service reports. It also includes funding and payment information from
client-held insurance, as well as from Public Aid and other sources of
reimbursements. Further, it holds general and medical staff memos generated by
the administration, and the medical staff rules, regulations and bylaws.
Finally, this series contains various directories, made up by the
administration of the Englewood area businesses and religious organizations,
Chicago area advertising media, and medical staff phone numbers.
