Summary description of the collection:

Correspondence (bulk 1923-1929), financial records (ca. 1929-1940), speeches, and topical files of Richard J. Finnegan, editor of the Chicago Daily Journal. Also included is a transcript of the McNally, Kurth, and Warren murder case (1893-1894). Topical files relate to concerns during World War II, such as the 1940 Presidential election, aid to Britain, conscription, Communists, comic strips, defense production, and plans for peace. Topics discussed in the collection include relations among Chicago newspapers, management of the newspapers with which Finnegan was associated (especially the Journal and the Chicago Times), political and other current events, and Finnegan's social activities.

The trial transcript relates to the conviction of Thomas NcNally, Charles Kurth, and Edward Warren in March 1894 for killing James Prunty and Peter Prunty during a burglary of their home in Chicago in 1893. The defendants continued to maintain their innocence, and the judge, Henry V. Freeman, eventually agreed with them. In 1915, McNally and Kurth were paroled; Warren had died in Joliet Prison.
