Biographical note:
Journalist
Harry Golden,
Jr., began working for the Chicago
Sun-Times in 1966 and became City Hall correspondent for the newspaper in
1967. Golden reported on city government under the administrations of five Chicago
mayors: Richard J. Daley, Michael Bilandic, Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, and Eugene
Sawyer. Before working in Chicago, Golden wrote for the Charlotte Observer and then the Detroit
Free Press. Golden also compiled and edited the writings of
his father, Harry Golden, an author and publisher of the Carolina Israelite. Harry Golden, Jr., died in 1988.

clippings and other papers of Harry Golden, Jr., a Chicago journalist.
Newspapers clippings consist mainly of articles Golden wrote as City Hall
correspondent for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Also present are materials relating to Chicago politics, including a 1/4"
audio tape of Mayor Richard J. Daley, travel itineraries for Mayor Harold Washington's
1985 junkets to Asia and Israel, Mayor Washington's 1987 inaugural program,
City of Chicago directories, magazine articles, and Chicago political campaign
memorabilia, including pens, shopping bags, and posters.

Series
1 consists of newspaper clippings of articles by Harry Golden, Jr., for the Chicago Sun-Times. As City Hall
correspondent, Golden covered topics including mayoral campaigns, city council
meetings, budget proposals, the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the
expansion of McCormick Place in the late 1960s, the death of Mayor Richard J. Daley
in 1976, the administrations of Chicago's first female Mayor Jane Byrne and
first African-American Mayor Harold Washington, and Mayor Washington's death in
office in 1987 and its political aftermath. Also included are clippings from
Golden's "Inside City Hall" column (1984-1985).
