Brief biography:
On February 23, 1971, Marilou
Hedlund was one of the first alderwomen to be elected to the City Council of
Chicago, Illinois. Before being elected to office, Hedlund received elementary
and high school education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Chicago,
Illinois. She then attended Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois, and
graduated with degrees in history and political science, and went on to study
at Newton College in Boston, Massachusetts. Before becoming an alderwoman, she worked
as a reporter and feature writer for the Chicago
Tribune. Hedlund was the recipient of many journalistic awards for youth
reporting, women’s interest features, and for general features. In addition to
her being the first woman to be elected to the City Council in 1971, she was
also the first woman to receive endorsement of the Democratic Organization of
Cook County for alderman.
While in office, Hedlund was
appointed to the City Council’s committees of Planning and Housing, Health,
Culture and Economic Development; and Forestry and Recreation. She was named
vice-chairman of Forestry and Recreation in 1973. In November of 1973, she was
one of five freshman aldermen (and the first woman ever) appointed to the Finance
Committee.
Hedlund represented the 48th Ward,
which was a lakefront ward in the areas of Uptown and Edgewater. The ward was
at the time the most diverse in the city, racially, ethnically, and
economically. Parts of the ward were “Model Cities” areas and urban renewal
areas. Hedlund focused much of her time on the youth living in her ward and was
known for her support for women’s rights (Equal Rights Amendment) and gay
rights. She also supported landmark preservation and several times fought for
historical buildings and sites to be preserved.
Hedlund served one term as
alderman, from 1971 to 1975. Five years after her retirement from the City
Council, she was appointed as an Illinois delegate to the Democratic National
Convention.
Description of the
collection:
Correspondence,
reports, memorandums, newspaper clippings, and topical reference files of
Hedlund when she served as Alderman (Democratic) of the 48th Ward (Uptown and
Edgewater community areas) in Chicago, Illinois. Papers concern neighborhood
organizations, political issues and city ordinances, problems of her
constituents and services for them available from government or charities,
condition of buildings and housing in her district, landmarks preservation, services
for senior citizens and youths, and day to day relations with various departments
of city government.
Original order of these papers has been maintained.
