Biographical/historical note:
The Illinois Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (IAFCS) was founded in 1921 the Illinois Home Economics Association, the state affiliate of the American Home Economics Association. In 1994, both groups changed their names, and the national organization became the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) is a national organization representing family and consumer sciences professionals across practice areas and specializations. The bylaws of the IAFCS state that the purpose of the group is to further education in family and consumer sciences; improve research; sponsor seminars, debates, symposiums, conferences; and disseminate policy for professional guidance.
The IAFCS publishes the Pacesetter newsletter that contains information about events such as scholarship fund drives, professional developmental opportunities, time and locations of IAFCS meetings, and articles about research in the field of consumer sciences. The IAFCS also holds many workshops on various topics such as family issues, the Internet, identity theft, decorating, retailing, cooking, and nutrition. They also conduct round-table discussions about the future of their profession and hold an annual teacher of the year award ceremony in addition to working on projects abroad, such as the Sun-Sol Project in Costa Rica, where they taught courses creating a solar box cooker.
A subgroup of the IAFCS was the Home Economists
in Homemaking (HEIH), whose member are full time home economists. This group had
several name changes over the years, including the Greater Chicago Home Economists
in Home and Community (GCHEHC) and the Greater Chicago Home and Community
Section (GCHCS), but disbanded in 2000 due to dwindling membership. The purpose
of this group was to promote professional growth for home economists and the
significance of homemaking in society; apply physical, biological, and social
sciences to the art of homemaking; and distribute information regarding
legislation affecting home economics and family life. Workshops and
course offered by the HEIH included researching childcare alternatives, financial
markets and planning for retirement, job training, fashion trend updates,
gardening, caring for the elderly, and women's health issues. They also
sponsored several tours of Chicago sites.
