Historical sketch
Born in Chicago to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Nathan Lerner (1913-1997) studied painting at the National Academy of Art and the Art Institute. In 1932 he began photographing in Chicago working class neighborhoods using a street-documentary approach to produce a significant series called "Maxwell Street." The work from this period is comparable to that of photo-artists like Walker Evans or Helen Levitt, but was made without any knowledge of their work, or of that of other documentary photographers like them. In 1937 Lerner entered Chicago’s New Bauhaus (a continuation of the German Bauhaus just closed by the Nazis), where he studied painting, photography and design under Alexander Archipenko, György Kepes and László Moholy-Nagy. Lerner also eagerly absorbed Bauhaus utopian concepts about the role of art and technology in society that these immigrant Europeans brought to the United States.
By 1941 the New Bauhaus had been renamed the School of Design, and Lerner was appointed head of its photography department. Throughout this time he became increasingly involved in formal experimentation, and particularly in photographic abstraction. Among the first to make abstract "light drawings" and photograms, Lerner was also credited by Moholy-Nagy (in The New Vision 1939), and by Walter Gropius (in the Bauhaus 1919-1928 catalogue for the Modern Museum of New York 1938) with expanding the creative range of the photographic medium, especially through his inventions such as the Lerner Photogram Machine, the Smoke Chamber and the Light-Box. These tools allow photographers to isolate objects from all contexts except controlled light and darkness, and thereby reduce the medium to its purest possible form. Generations of photographers and artists have benefited from Lerner’s innovations. In 1941 Lerner co-authored The Creative Use of Light with György Kepes. His attempts to "let the medium speak for itself" are among the finest examples of the modernist impulse toward quasi-scientific objectivity. As such they can be linked to contemporaneous scientific experiments--most obviously the Cloud Chambers used by early molecular physicists to track ionized atomic particles in space. After serving as a light consultant for the Navy during World War II Lerner returned to Chicago, first to become the dean of the School of Design faculty and chairman of its Product Design Workshop, and then the School’s educational director. During the late 1940s through the 1960s he worked independently as a designer of consumer products with his own firm, demonstrating an astonishing creative range, which included the "Honeybear" honey container, an icon of American marketing. |
From 1966 to 1977, Lerner taught as a distinguished professor of design philosophy at the University of Illinois. While throughout his life he had pursued photography as an art form, during this period he primarily concentrated on creating graphic abstractions and working with color enlargements for the first time, as did many other major photographers such as Ansel Adams, Walker Evans and Harry Callahan, late in their own careers.
For reasons that may be understood after further investigation, Lerner was in his 60s before his photographs began to be exhibited outside his own classrooms, although they had appeared, a few at a time, in seminal books by artist/theoreticians, such as Moholy-Nagy, Kepes, and Gropius. His photographic work has been collected by dozens of important institutions worldwide, but with few exceptions the majority of exhibitions to feature it were confined to smaller venues in Chicago.
Description of the collection:
Correspondence; design drawings for many inventions, patents, and associated photographs; job files; exhibition catalogs; and other Chicago office files of Nathan Lerner relating to his career as a photographer, designer, and teacher and to his personal life. For many years, he was associated with the New Bauhaus (begining in 1937), the School of Design, the Institute of Design, and as a professor at the University of Illinois (1966-1977). Topics include experimental photography; his many inventions and patents; renovations of the Edgewater Beach Hotel (1959-1961); teaching; and the Chicago and the international architectural and industrial design communities.
Notes:
Related collections at the Chicago Historical Society include Nathan Lerner collection of visual materials (2000.0200), Nathan Lerner Maxwell Street photograph collection (2000.0194.2-38), and a single exhibition photograph of the Maxwell Street area (1992.0248). There also is a published version of the Maxwell Street photographs.
Forms part of the Institute of Design collection at the Chicago History Museum.
The Institute of Design began in Chicago in 1937 as the New Bauhaus; closed in 1938; reopened in 1939 as the Chicago School of Design; changed name in 1944 to the Institute of Design; became part of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1949.
