Biographical/historical note:

In 1992, Carol Moseley Braun became the first African American woman elected to the United States Senate. Her career began in 1973 as a lawyer for the U.S. Attorney's Office as a State Prosecutor. In 1978, she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. Chicago Mayor Harold Washington selected Moseley Braun as his legislative floor leader in 1983. She also became the first African American and the first woman in Illinois history to serve as Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois House of Representatives. From 1988 to 1992, she served as Recorder of Deeds for Cook County, Ill.

 

As a United States senator from 1993 to 1999, she served on the Judiciary Committee, the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, and the Small Business Committee. After her term as senator, Carol Moseley Braun was the United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa from 1999 to 2001. After leaving office, she has been an entrepreneur, and she is a resident of Chicago, Ill., Atlanta, Ga., and Union Springs, Ala.

 

The "firsts" she achieved include: the first and only African American woman elected to the United States Senate, the first African American U.S. senator for the Democratic Party, the first woman to defeat an incumbent U.S. senator in an election, and the first and only female senator from Illinois.

 

She was born in Chicago in 1947 to Edna and Joseph Moseley. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1969 and earned her law degree from the University of Chicago in 1972.

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. Staff Researcher Marcus Fruchter, 1992-1998 (box 1-16)

This series contains speeches and letters written by and for Senator Carol Moseley Braun compiled by Marcus Fruchter, who served as a staff researcher from 1996 until 1998.  Also contained in the series are multiple volumes of her Congressional voting record, legislative activities and Federal Election Commission filings.  Of particular note is a report in Box 5, "The Medal of Honor and African Americans in the United States Army during World War II," that addresses the issue of discrimination in the United States military.

 

Series 2. Scheduling, 1992-1998 (box 17-232)

Housed in eight subseries, this series contains invitations, correspondence, and notes often addressed to schedulers or staff members. Invitations are for events, such as fundraisers, galas, film screenings, and meetings. The series is organized by the staff members who compiled them.

This subseries includes correspondence to and from Jill Zwick, as well as constituent requests, briefing books, case files, and scheduling information she compiled.  Zwick served as the director of the Chicago Office and Executive Assistant to Senator Moseley Braun from 1993 to 1997.  She also served as Deputy Campaign Manager in 1992, and the Illinois State Director of the senatorial re-election campaign.

This subseries contains invitations, phone message logs, and professional files on legislative issues handled by Lynette Stanton.

This subseries includes briefing files and amendment proposals. Topics covered include Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reform, affirmative action and civil rights, the federal budget, campaign finance, taxes, immigration, and crime. Also included are briefing files concerning the Congressional Black Caucus. Other topics present are the Internet Predator Prevention Act of 1998, local law enforcement, gun legislation, Spousal and Child Immigration Act, McCain-Feingold bill, drunk driving, drugs, African American senators, tobacco taxes, women's business ownership, Amtrak, MacArthur Foundation, and corporate welfare.

Also included are materials containing Chicago poverty statistics, Kids S.A.F.E. Act, child support enforcement, Medicare, HIV/AIDS research, and ovarian cancer research.

This subseries consists of correspondence, banking briefing books, legislative files, government hearing materials, judicial appointments, and civil rights violations.

 

Subseries 9. Legislative Correspondent, Mathew Henson, 1992-1998 (box 587-593)

This subseries includes correspondence on behalf of the Senator by Legislative Correspondent Matthew Henson to members of Congress and federal agency heads and correspondence on behalf of jurists seeking nominations for federal judicial appointments.

 

Subseries 10. Legislative Correspondent, Khushali Parikh, 1992-1998 (box 593-598)

This subseries includes correspondence on behalf of the Senator by Legislative Correspondent Khushali Parikh. It includes legislative correspondence related to health care, crime, taxes, and welfare. Topics include American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), budget resolutions, Parkinson's disease, and the fertility industry.

 

Subseries 11. Legislative Director Todd Atkinson, 1992-1998 (box 599-659)

This series contains correspondence and research files on appropriations, county projects, agriculture, public works, national defense, and the environment handled by Legislative Director Todd Atkinson. Notable in this series are Congressional appropriations reports from Fiscal Year 1991 to Fiscal Year 1998 that list Illinois projects.

 

Subseries 12. Assistant to Legislative Director, 1992-1998 (box 659-667)

This subseries includes letters to major donors and constituents, employment files for interns, and judicial appointment nomination files handled by Elizabeth Freeston, the Assistant to the Legislative Director. Topics include judicial nominations, Social Security, civil rights, crime, health and welfare, labor, housing, foreign affairs, banking, deficit reduction, agriculture, and appropriations.

 

Series 5. Press, 1992-1998 (box 667-732)

This series consists of press clippings mentioning Moseley Braun, including coverage of her 1998 campaign and the 1992 campaign finance controversy, floor statements, press releases, copies of a series of regular columns authored by Moseley Braun for publication in Illinois newspapers, press releases, and photographs of the Senator with family, friends, celebrities, constituents, politicians, and heads of state such as President Bill Clinton and South African leader Nelson Mandela. Some topics included are abortion, adoption, affirmative action, AIDS, banking, campaign finance reform, capital punishment, child care, education, labor, civil rights, crime, gun control, higher education, and taxes. Box 713 is closed to researchers until 2068.

 

Series 6. Chief of Staff Files, 1992-1998 (box 732-763)

This series, with four subseries, contains administrative files compiled during the tenure of three chiefs of staff and an assistant to the chief of staff.  These files primarily include information on the Senator's employees and the budgets at the Senator's offices in Washington, D.C. and Illinois.

This subseries contains phone messages left for either Moseley Braun or her first Chief of Staff Michael Frazier.

 

Subseries 2. Edith Wilson, 1992-1998 (box 734-737)

This subseries contains administrative files for the Washington, D.C. and Illinois offices, including budget statements, office reports, job descriptions, employee manuals and speeches prepared for the Senator.  Of note are two files from the Federal Election Commission's audit of Moseley Braun's 1992 Senatorial Campaign.

 

Subseries 3. Bill Mattea, 1992-1998 (box 737-748)

This subseries contains administrative files compiled by Chief of Staff Bill Mattea, including office reports, budgets proposals, and memos regarding staffing. Of note are letters from the Senate Ethics Committee regarding allegations of campaign finance misappropriations.

 

Subseries 4. Assistant to the Chief of Staff Tina Gislason, 1992-1998 (box 748-763)

This subseries contains administrative files compiled by Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Tina Gislason, including letters of recommendation, weekly office reports, legislative director reports, and personnel files.

This series contains correspondence, grant proposals, and information for programs, projects, and grants. Some topics included are housing, health care, youth services, education, academic improvement, economic development, telecommunications, agriculture, commerce, community development, defense, law enforcement. Some organizations mentioned are Schwab Rehab, Fort Sheridan, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Chicago Vietnam Veterans and Family Assistance Program (CVVFAP), the National Congress for Community Economic Development (NCCED), Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), St. Louis Development Corporation, School-To-Work, Pullman State Historic Site, Safe Havens, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and Women's Initiatives Network Project (WIN).
