Biographical/historical note:

The Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy is affiliated with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a national membership organization whose purpose is to encourage the preservation of natural areas for study and research. The national organization originated in 1917, when a group known as the Ecological Society, which realized that natural areas suitable for study were vanishing, established a Committee for the Preservation of Natural Areas.

In 1946, the Committee became a separate entity, the Ecologists Union. After a few years of operation during which the Union encouraged other groups to establish natural areas, its membership adopted certain changes in order to function more effectively. In 1950, the Union, consisting at that time of about 342 members, changed its name to The Nature Conservancy and gained tax-exempt status, which enhanced its ability to raise funds. In 1951, it was incorporated in Washington D.C.

The new organization spent several years experimenting with various methods of land preservation. Then, in 1954, the Conservancy undertook its first preservation project, Mianus Gorge in Westchester County, New York. A group of Connecticut residents drew the Conservancy into the project by securing affiliation with the Conservancy in order to raise money to preserve the Gorge. TNC’s second project, in the same year, was Sunken Forest in Fire Island, New York. By 1969, TNC had either partial or total responsibility for the preservation of more than 350 areas in 40 states, totaling more than 100,000 acres, and could claim 18,000 members and 33 chapters.

The Illinois Chapter of TNC was founded in 1951 at the suggestion of George B. Fell, who was for some time Executive Director of TNC and also associated with the Natural Land Institute. The founders of the Illinois group hoped to preserve remaining natural areas in the state, such as original prairie land found in railroad right-of-ways, and to help educate the public in matters of conservation.

The Illinois Chapter began initiating and administering its own conservation projects in the mid-1950s with projects such as Volo and Wauconda bogs in Lake County, Illinois. Typically, the Illinois Chapter participates in publicity and fundraising in order to secure the property, which it then buys or turns over to a responsible private owner like a university or to the State. To protect the areas against future exploitation, a reverter clause is included in the property transfer papers. Both Volo and Wauconda bogs were secured in 1959, and, since that time, the Illinois Chapter has undertaken other projects involving prairie chicken sanctuaries, woodland preserves, prairies, lakes, swamps, and caves. TNC’s single goal is to preserve and protect wild land and make natural areas available to the public. The Illinois Chapter has focused mostly on smaller areas that fall outside the scope of the State conservation department.

Active officers, members, and supporters over the years have included George B. Fell, Cyrus Mark, taxonomist Lewis J. Stannard, Donald T. Ries (who was the first president of the Illinois group), Dr. Margery Carlson of Northwestern University, Elliott Donnelly of R. R. Donnelly and Sons Company, Dr. and Mrs. S. Glidden Baldwin, and Charles Haffner III, as well as many other persons. The Illinois Chapter maintains an office in Evanston.

Summary description of the collection:

Correspondence, minutes, financial records, and publicity items concerning the role of The Nature Conservancy’s Illinois Chapter in preserving natural areas in the state that are suitable for scientific study and education use, including prairies, bogs, caves, swamps, prairie chicken sanctuaries, etc. The Nature Conservancy is a privately funded, membership organization incorporated in Washington D.C.

Many of the files also contain materials generated by Dr. Margery Carlson, a botanist and active supporter of TNC who served for some years as secretary of the Illinois Chapter and also participated in fundraising and membership drives and educational activities. The primary subject is preservation of natural areas in Illinois, especially preservation of the remaining undisturbed tracts that are typical of pre-industrial Illinois and of protected habitats for native wildlife species, such as prairie chickens.

Arrangement of the collection:

The collection is arranged in four series:

Series 1. Minutes, Board of Trustees, 1962-1975 (box 1-2)

Series 2. Financial Records, 1957-1977 (box 3-8)

Series 3. Office Files, 1954-1976 (box 8-15)

Series 4. Projects, 1954-1977 (box 15-25)

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. Minutes, Board of Trustees, 1962-1975 (box 1-2)

Series 1 contains minutes, reports, and other materials related to Illinois Chapter Board of Trustees meetings, 1962-1975. The Board of Trustees is the governing board of the Illinois Chapter, and the persons who are elected chairman, vice chairman, treasurer and secretary are the Chapter officers. In addition to the proceedings of the meetings, these files contain summaries of the Illinois Chapter’s activities and current projects, financial statements, project proposals, and reports of day-to-day operations and other organizational matters. The files are arranged chronologically by year.

Series 2. Financial Records, 1957-1977 (box 3-8)

Series 2 contains journals, ledgers, deposit records, financial reports, membership and dues records, and development files, 1957-1977. Not all types of records are represented for all years. The files are arranged alphabetically by topic or type of material. Some additional information on membership can be found in Series 3, and information on contributions to specific projects can be found in Series 4.

Series 3. Office Files, 195-1976 (box 8-15)

Series 3 consists primarily of correspondence files and some subject files of materials generated in connection with the activities of the Illinois Chapter. The correspondence deals with preservation projects, membership, the relationship of the Illinois Chapter to the national office, and organizational matters in general. Major correspondents include George B. Fell, Walter S. Boardman, Cyrus Mark, Lewis J. Stannard, John Humke (Midwest Regional Director in the late 1960s and into the 1980s), Daniel Pike, and others.

Much of the material in this series pertains to the activities of Dr. Margery Carlson, an active member and officer of the Illinois Chapter from the 1950s through the 1970s, and also, for many years, a professor of botany at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Carlson investigated many potential sites both before and after preservation by TNC, lectured frequently on the topics of conservation and TNC activities, and helped raise funds and increase TNC membership. There are several files in this series labeled “Dr. Margery Carlson,” and other documents generated by her are spread throughout the collection.

The files in Series 3 are arranged alphabetically by topic or type of material. Correspondence is arranged chronologically by year, except for a few files on certain individuals, which are arranged alphabetically.

Series 4. Projects, 1954-1977 (box 15-25)

Series 4 contains files on “projects,” natural areas preserved through the efforts of the Illinois Chapter of TNC, 1954-1977. These records document the selection, acquisition, and management of preserve areas, including Volo and Wauconda bogs, prairie chicken sanctuaries, Pine Rock, Devil’s Prop, Little Black Slough, Rocky Branch, Big Bend, etc. The bulk of the information on Illinois Chapter projects is contained within this series, but correspondence concerning the projects can also be found in Series 3, some financial reports can be found in Series 2, and additional information and progress reports can be found in the minutes and reports of Series 1. The files of Series 4 are arranged alphabetically by name of project or preserve area.
