Biographical/historical note:
Florence Lowden
Miller (1898-1988) was a major Chicago philanthropist and civic leader, and
descendant of families prominent in Chicago for many decades.
The Sangers:
Mrs. Miller's
grandmother was born Harriett Sanger and known as Hattie Sanger (1842-1921).
Hattie’s father, James Y. Sanger (1814-1857), was a construction engineer and
contractor when railroads were in the early stages of expansion and canals were
important public works. Born in Vermont, he spent 30 of his 43 years based in
Chicago making the most of opportunities. James risked his career and fortune
in various enterprises, such as the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal
and a railroad to California, often in partnership with his brothers, Lorenzo
and Lucien. The Sangers also invested in Chicago's South Branch addition.
Hattie's mother, nee Mary Catherine McKibben (1818-1904), was the daughter of a
Revolutionary War colonel. She came to Chicago at the age of 19. Each of her
children except Hattie preceded her in death: two infant daughters, and her
sons James M. Sanger (1844-1877) and Frederick Sanger (1852-1896).
The Pullmans:
In 1867, Hattie
Sanger married George M. Pullman (1831-1897). Their home at 1729 Prairie Ave.
was built in 1876 near the site of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Hattie and
George entertained in its elegant and opulent rooms, which included a large
theatre, bowling alley, billiard room, and conservatory. Hattie traveled
extensively. In addition to European destinations, she spent many summers in
Elberon, New Jersey, and winters in Pasadena, California, where she died in
1921. Her funeral was the final function held in the Prairie Avenue home. It
was demolished in 1922.
George Pullman was
born in New York state and originally trained as a cabinetmaker. He became a
building contractor in Chicago in the 1850s where he devised a program to raise
the city's buildings above the prairie mud. In the 1860s he also backed the
creation of an elegant parlor and sleeping car for railroad passengers. In
1867, he organized the Pullman Palace Car Company to manufacture sleeping,
parlor and dining railroad cars. He founded the town of Pullman, Illinois, at
111th Street and Lake Calumet in 1880 as a model community for the workers of
his company. He named the Hotel Florence in Pullman for his daughter. (Pullman,
Illinois, later was annexed to the City of Chicago). The violent Pullman strike
in 1894 occurred when the Pullman Palace Car Company reduced wages without
equally reducing rents in the company town.
George and Hattie's
children were Florence, born in 1868 (?); Harriet, born in 1869; and twin sons
George, Jr. and Walter Sanger (called Sanger), born in 1875. The eldest,
Florence was especially favored by her father. The other daughter, Harriet,
married Francis Carolan (known as Frank) of San Francisco in 1892. He died in
1923. In 1925, she married Arthur F. Schermerhorn of New York City, and he died
in 1933. She died in New York City in 1956. The Pullman sons had short,
seemingly unhappy lives in the quest of their father's approval. George Jr.
died after a brief illness in 1901; Sanger was killed in an accident in 1905.
The Lowdens:
George Pullman's
beloved daughter Florence Pullman (1868-1937) had a long and happy life with
her husband Frank Oren Lowden (1861-1943), whom she married in 1896. She died
suddenly in 1937.
Lowden was a lawyer
and served as a U.S. congressman from Illinois before winning election as
governor in 1916. He came close to winning the 1920 Republican presidential
nomination--Warren G. Harding was chosen instead in the infamous
"smoke-filled room" of Chicago's Blackstone Hotel. After completing
his term as governor in 1921, Frank Lowden and his family lived at Sinnissippi
Farm, an estate in Oregon, Illinois.
Frank Lowden and
Florence Pullman Lowden had four children: George Mortimer Pullman Lowden
(called Pullman, born in 1897); Florence (born in 1898); Harriet Elizabeth
(born in 1900) and Frances Oren (born in 1903). In 1925, Harriet and Frances
married prominent Chicagoans: Harriet married Chicago banker Albert F.
Madlener, Jr., and Frances married businessman John B. Drake, Jr. George M.
Pullman Lowden married in the late 1930s and resided in California.
The Millers:
While her father
was governor, Florence Lowden resided much of the time in Springfield,
Illinois. Later in the 1920s, she traveled extensively overseas. On a trip to
the Near East in 1929, Florence became fascinated with ancient cultures. Upon
her return she enrolled at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute as an
unclassified student.
It was during this
period that she met Dr. C. Phillip Miller (1891-1984), a native of Oak Park,
Illinois, who was a medical researcher and professor of medicine at the
university. They married in 1931 and lived in the Hyde Park community of
Chicago. The Millers were involved in philanthropic and cultural activities at
the University of Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, and Chicago Historical
Society, among other institutions. Florence was the first woman board member of
the Chicago Community Trust and was president of the George M. Pullman
Educational Foundation. She also was active in running Sinnissippi Farm and in
Ogle County, Illinois, conservation programs. She and Dr. Miller had two sons,
Phillip (1938) and Warren (1940).
After her death in
1988, she was interred at Graceland Cemetery with her husband of more than 50
years, Dr. C. Phillip Miller. Her grandfather, George, grandmother, Hattie, and
great aunt, Harriet Schermerhorn, lie to the east beneath the tall Corinthian
column of the George M. Pullman monument designed by Solon Beman. On the west
side are the graves of her mother and father, Florence Pullman Lowden and Frank
Oren Lowden. Her Sanger ancestors also are buried in Graceland.
