Biographical/historical note:
Sally
Rand became famous for her "fan dance" and her "bubble
dance" (using balloons) that she performed at the Century of Progress
International Exposition (1933-1934 Chicago world's fair) and continued to
showcase as a burlesque dancer in later years. She was the daughter of Anita
Grove (later known as Anita Kisling) and Colonel William Beck, a veteran of the
Spanish-American war. She was born Helen Harriet Gould Beck on April 3, 1904,
in Hickory County, Missouri, in the village of Elkton. She showed an early
interest in show business. At the age of thirteen, she ran away to join a
carnival that brought her to Kansas City, where she danced as a chorus girl in
vaudeville performances at the Empress Theatre.
Rand
eventually relocated to Hollywood, but on the way she served briefly as an
acrobat in the Ringling Brothers Circus and appeared in a production of Rain opposite Humphrey Bogart. Rand called
herself "Billy Beck" by the time she reached Hollywood and made the
rounds of the studios. Cecil B. DeMille found a place for "Billy
Beck" in his stock company and cast her in many silent films in the 1920s.
Sally credits DeMille for giving her the stage name, "Sally Rand,"
which first appeared in the movie credits of DeMille's King of Kings in which Sally was cast as a slave girl to Mary
Magdalene. Sally Rand became a popular silent film actor and was named a WAMPUS
Baby Star in 1927.
When sound
motion pictures began to displace silent films, Rand left Hollywood to dance in
front of live audiences. She studied solo ballet and developed her own
interpretative solo dance act. Initially coming to Chicago in a show called
"Sweethearts on Parade" in 1932; Rand soon accepted a position at the
Paramount Club. It was at the Paramount Club that she first performed the
"Fan Dance," using two large ostrich feather fans purchased at a
second-hand shop. When the Chicago world's fair opened in 1933, the
administration of the fair had given permission for a girlie show to operate on
the midway, to be named the "Streets of Paris." When her application
for a place in the show was rejected, Rand devised a plan to win a spot in the
revue. Rand hired a boat to bring her to the fairgrounds astride a white horse,
wearing only a long blonde wig. Rand came riding down the "Streets of
Paris" as "Lady Godiva." With this unauthorized stunt, she was
able to garner enough press and publicity to guarantee her a spot in the fair.
She was billed as the inventor of the "Fan Dance" and became one of the
fair's star attractions. When the fair reopened in 1934, Rand debuted a new
routine using a large rubber balloon or bubble, which became known as the
"Bubble Dance."
After
the Chicago world's fair, Rand performed at the California Pacific Exposition
held in San Diego in 1935-1936. Rand also opened a nude show at the 1936
Frontier Exposition in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1939, she hosted the "Sally
Rand Nude Ranch" at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. The show
was housed at the Music Box and featured women wearing only cowboy hats, gun
belts, loosely tied scarves around their necks, and boots. Rand also frequently
made appearances at state and local fairs.
Over
the years, Rand directed her own "Star Studded Revue" for Royal
American Shows. She worked in every aspect of the show, including building her
own scenery, designing costumes, supervising light cues, writing lyrics, and
working for booking and publicity. Rand often found time to fill speaking
appointments at luncheon clubs or before dinners of service clubs and fraternal
organizations. She also visited service hospitals and gave radio interviews.
She had her own public television program. In 1954, while appearing at the
Silver Slipper in Las Vegas, she conducted a weekly television program for
KLAS-TV Las Vegas. It was an informal talk show where Rand would interview
celebrities, impart fashion hints, discuss beauty and health problems, read
poetry, and conduct her own commercials. She also conducted a show for KPRC-TV
in Houston, Texas.
Rand
traveled the United Sates, successfully fulfilling dancing contracts for many
years. From May 1954 to January 1955, Rand appeared at the Last Frontier Hotel
in Las Vegas for a record-breaking 32-week engagement. She was 51 years old.
Rand
was married three times. Her first marriage was in 1942 to James "Turk"
Greenough, a cowboy rodeo star. Her second and third husbands were Harry
Finkelstein, a businessman and manager, and Fred Lalla, a plaster contractor.
All three marriages ended in divorce. In 1948, Rand adopted Sean Orion Rand.
Sally Rand died on August 31, 1979, in Glendora, California. She was survived
by her son and two grandchildren.
Summary description of the collection:

Detailed description of archival series in
the collection:
Series 1. Personal files, 1903-1955, n.d. (box
1-8)
Series
1 contains the personal papers of Sally Rand, including her diary (1954),
writings, notes, poetry, correspondence, financial and legal documents, house
plans, and clippings. This series also contains materials relating to Fred
Lalla, Rand's third husband, and his family from a previous marriage. There are
also materials relating to the personal property of Sally Rand, including
automobile documents, materials relating to the Kisling family grove in
Glendora, California, and a house in Key West, Florida. The legal materials
found in this series include the lawsuit Al Wagner, owner of Cavalcade of
Amusements, brought against Rand and NBC in 1950. Rand made an ad-lib remark
during a NBC radio appearance that prompted Al Wagner to file suit against NBC
and Rand for "defamatory remarks." In 1952, a court ruled the network
as not liable for the unexpected comments of a guest performer. Other legal
documents relate to various divorces, indecency charges, financial lawsuits,
and an immigration case regarding one of her employees. There may be some
business papers scattered within this series. The series is arranged
alphabetically by title.
Series 2. Correspondence, 1918-1955, n.d. (box
8-24)
Series
2 consists of personal and business correspondence. The series is arranged into
two subseries.
Subseries 2.1. Alphabetical files,
1918-1955, n.d.
Subseries

names and addresses. Rand kept alphabetical correspondence files relating to
both personal and professional subjects. Correspondence from individuals not

Beck (Rand's father), Harold Beck (Rand's brother), Sean Rand (Rand's adopted
son), Harry Finkelstein (Rand's second husband), Fred Lalla (Rand's third
husband), and correspondence with various booking agents, attorneys and tax
consultants. There is a significant amount of family correspondence that is
filed alphabetically under "Family."
Subseries 2.2. Chronological files,
1939-1955, n.d.
Subseries
2.2 consists of correspondence that was loosely filed throughout the
collection. The subseries is arranged chronologically, with addresses listed
first. Addresses are folders of names and addresses that are made up of
business cards, notes with handwritten names and numbers, and empty addressed
envelopes. As with Subseries 2.1, there is a mix of personal and professional
correspondence. Sally often worked with close friends and family, which is
reflected in this subseries. Some names found in the alphabetical subseries may
also be found in the chronological subseries.
Series 3. Business files, 1933-1955, n.d. (box
24-58)
Series
3 includes materials relating to Sally's professional career as an entertainer,
including lyrics, musical scores, tour receipts, payroll, costume and stage
designs, publicity and advertising materials, programs, billing sheets,
