Biographical/Historical note:
The Sophia Fund was begun in 1983 by Lucia Woods Lindley and awarded grants to organizations that worked for more equitable systems within society. The Sophia Fund worked under the assumption that discrimination against one segment of society was detrimental to society as a whole, and it awarded funds to organizations that helped fight discrimination against women. Ms. Lindley offered the directorship of The Sophia Fund to Sonia Fischer (Sunny) in 1983. Sunny Fischer served in the following groups: Chicago Foundation for Women, Chicago Women in Philanthropy, National Network of Women's Funds (later known as Women's Funding Network), and Women in Charge. Ms. Fischer was the founder and chair of The Poverty Task Force of Chicago's Donors Forum.
Mary Servatius came to The Sophia Fund as its program officer in1986. Ms. Servatius became a leader in Chicago Women in Philanthropy. Daranee Petsod was a University of Chicago intern in 1987. After Ms. Servatius left to work for the Chicago Resource Center, Pat Longoria took her place beginning in 1990.
Ms. Fischer and Ms. Lindley chose to begin with the pro-choice agenda and the problem of violence against women. They determined to focus on Chicago area and national groups. They also determined to focus on advocacy, research, public education, and legislative change. The goal was philanthropy to encourage others to participate in philanthropy for women.
In 1985, The Sophia Fund began publishing an annual report which listed the grants awarded and the amounts. The Sophia Fund's grants addressing violence against women for 1985 included: $2500 to the Center for Constitutional Rights (NYC) toward printing costs for an educational brochure on changes in the laws on marital rape, and $2000 to the Loop YWCA (Chicago) towards the costs of a newsletter to disseminate information on rape issues and the programs of the Chicago Sexual Assault Services Network. Grants in 1985 supporting reproductive rights included: $3000 to the Alan Guttmacher Institute (NYC) toward the expenses of a research project, a cost/benefit analysis of public funding of abortion for Medicaid-eligible women, $3417 to the Planned Parenthood Association (Chicago) for general operating expenses in providing family planning education and advocacy on rights and access to service, and $3046 to Women Organized for Reproductive Choice (Chicago) for general operating expenses for this advocacy, referral, and educational group working on reproductive rights issues.
Ms. Lindley and Ms. Fischer were founders of the Chicago Foundation for Women, designed to be a new community funding resource for women's organizations and projects in the Chicago area. The Sophia Fund awarded a grant of over $25,000 to the Chicago Foundation for Women in 1985.
The Sophia Fund, with offices at 53 West Jackson Boulevard in Chicago, continued awarding grants until 1991. Some of the organizations that received grants in addition to the ones described above include: Crisis Center for South Suburbia, Edgewater Uptown Community Mental Health Center's Rape Victim Services Program, Rape Victim Advocates, Illinois NARAL Fund, Illinois Pro-Choice Alliance, Chicago Women's Health Center, National Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, and Pro Bono Advocates-Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under the Law.
In February 1991, Lucia Woods Lindley announced that at the end of the year The Sophia Fund would cease to be an independent foundation, instead becoming a part of the Chicago Foundation for Women (for the Chicago area groups) and of the MS. Foundation, to address the national concerns of The Sophia Fund. Ms. Lindley had other responsibilities that led to her decision, including the presidency of the Woods Charitable Fund and her relocation in New York.
Lucia Woods Lindley:
Lucia Woods Lindley, the founder of the Sophia Fund, was born in Chicago in 1937. Her father was Frank H. Woods, the chairman of the board of the Art Institute of Chicago, former president of the Welfare Council of Metropolitan Chicago, and trustee of Woods Charitable Fund, Inc. She received a bachelor's degree in 1959 from Sweet Briar College and moved to New York City. After working as an interior designer, she became a professional photographer.
Lucia Woods has had many one-person shows of her photographic works, including at The Art Institute of Chicago, and has given many presentations, especially at conferences on Willa Cather. A book, Willa Cather: A Pictorial Memoir, with photographs by Lucia Woods and text by Bernie Slote, was published in 1973 and reprinted in 1986.
In 1978, Lucia Woods married Daniel A. Lindley, Jr., an English professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and moved to Evanston (Ill.) from New York City.
Ms. Lindley has been very involved in philanthropic endeavors and served in many different organizations. She served as a trustee of the Woods Charitable Fund from 1980-1990 and became its president in 1990. She founded The Sophia Fund and continued to serve as the trustee for the fund from 1983 to its end as a private foundation in 1991. She also served on the advisory committee for the Chicago Foundation for Women.
In addition to her philanthropic endeavors, Ms. Lindley has been involved with many humanities institutions. She served on the board of governors for the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial in Red Cloud, Nebraska. She also served on the Committee on Photography for the Art Institute of Chicago, on the board of directors for the Goodman Theatre, and as a member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago.
Sunny Fischer:
Ms. Sonia (Sunny) Fischer's work has involved various philanthropic and women's issues. In addition to serving as the executive director of The Sophia Fund, she co-founded and served as the secretary of the board of the Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW). She also developed and chaired CFW's grant allocation process. She served as the co-chair of both the Chicago Women in Philanthropy and the National Network of Women's Funds. Ms. Fischer chaired a research study, "Shortchanged: Chicago Foundations' and Corporations' Funding of Women's Organizations," and a gender discrimination subcommittee for the United Way of Chicago. Ms. Fischer also was involved with the United Way Board of Evanston, SHALVA (a service for battered women), Day Care Satellite funding collaboration, and Mujeres Latinas en Accion.
Ms. Fischer previously had worked as an educator, a researcher, and a social worker who concentrated on survivors of rape and spousal abuse. She received her bachelor's degree from the College of the City University of New York and her master's degree from The University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration. Among various awards, Sunny Fischer received their professional grants award in 1990, and Lucia Woods Lindley received the Distinguished Philanthropic Award in 1989.
