Roger Throop
Vaughan was born 1878 May 1 to Martha Throop Vaughan and John Charles Vaughan
of Chicago, who was the founder of Vaughan's Seed Company (later based in
Downers Grove, Illinois). Roger attended Chicago Manual Training School and
University of Chicago's Academic College in 1890s; a five-month course of study
in Berlin in 1899; enrolled in Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in fall 1900;
attended summer session 1901 of Harvard Medical School; entered Rush Medical
College in fall 1901 and received M.D. degree from Rush, 1903 Dec. 18. He
completed internship at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Chicago; traveled to Vienna
(1905) for postgraduate study; returned to Chicago to serve as attending
surgeon and assistant warden at Cook County Hospital. In 1922, he was named
Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at University of Chicago. He died Nov.
13, 1950.
Description of the collection:
Letters (74)
by Dr. Roger Throop Vaughan, mostly addressed to his mother and written while
away from his Chicago home, including Austrian travel letters in 1899 and 1905;
letters while studying at Johns Hopkins University and at Harvard University
medical schools; and letters written during short trips to visit family and his
father's business associates in Pennsylvania and New York state. The letters
Vaughan sent from New York City are written on stationary of the Vaughan Seed
Company Store in that city. Letters detail the weather, his study schedule, his
finances, activities of his friends in Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and daily
life, thus providing a detailed description of American medical education.
Vaughan's letters also often discuss family affairs and specifics of his father's
business, thus providing description of the prosperous family's social and
economic activities.
