Summary description of the collection:

Archival records of the administration of the World's Columbian Exposition (WCE) and of its Board of Lady Managers, which operated the Woman's Building, its programs, and exhibitions at the fair. Collection includes WCE general administration records, including meeting minutes of the WCE's board of directors, executive committee, buildings and grounds committee, and other records. In addition, there are a few miscellaneous stock certificates, invitations, letters, and planning documents, most originally issued by the WCE. The Board of Lady Managers (BLM) records include meeting minutes of its board of directors, reports, lists, etc., and extensive correspondence.

The BLM's letterpress copy books of outgoing letters are 9 volumes, 1890-1895, with alphabetical indexes to addressees in each volume. Most outgoing letters are by Bertha H. Palmer, president of the BLM. Incoming letters to the BLM fill 6 boxes, 1890-1904, plus a few original outgoing letters. Topics of the BLM records include the design of the Woman's Building and arrangements for exhibitions within the building, committees and individual women representing states of the United States and foreign countries; and women receiving awards for creative work, such as needlework, crafts, inventions, and works of art. Most items are arranged chronologically within volumes.

Description of some materials related to the collection:

Related materials at Chicago History Museum, Research Center, include publications by representatives of the World's Columbian Exposition and others about the fair; original photographs; manuscript items written by various fair visitors; and publications relating to the congresses held in conjunction with the fair, such as the World's Parliament of Religions, all cataloged separately.

In addition to the WCE-Board of Lady Managers records, there are three other collections at the Research Center containing Bertha H. Palmer manuscript items; they are 1. the Bertha H. Palmer papers, 2. the Potter Palmer and Palmer estate papers, and 3. the Bertha Palmer and Palmer family research collection.

Sound recordings made by Benjamin Ives Gilman of the Javanese, Samoan, Turkish, and Vancouver Island Indian exhibits at the World's Columbian Exposition are described in v. 8 of The Federal cylinder project: A guide to field cylinder recordings in federal agencies, by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress. These recordings are not available at Chicago History Museum.

Arrangement of the collection:

Series 1. Volumes of WCE general administration and the Board of Lady Managers (BLM):

Subseries 1. Volumes of the Board of Lady Managers (BLM):

Subseries 2: Volumes of WCE general administration:

Series 2. BLM incoming letters, etc. (6 boxes, 1890-1904)

Series 3. Miscellaneous materials relating to the WCE

Detailed description of archival series in the collection:

Series 1. Volumes of WCE general administration and the Board of Lady Managers (BLM):

Subseries 1. Volumes of the Board of Lady Managers (BLM):

This subseries contains letterpress copies of outgoing letters that were compiled chronologically as each letter was written; stamped with a page number; and the addressee's name was added to an index under the appropriate letter of the alphabet. Later, these stacks of copies were bound into volumes. Therefore indexes are not in perfect alphabetical order; volumes are not in perfect chronological order; and some volumes contain 2 sets of page numbers (for example, page 121 may occur in two sections of one volume).

Index pages from the letterpress volumes have been photocopied and are available with the descriptive inventory at Chicago History Museum, Research Center.

Most of the Board of Lady Managers records were formerly known as the Bertha H. Palmer collection.

A microfilm copy is available for volume 14.

Subseries 2: Volumes of WCE general administration:

Most of the World's Columbian Exposition's Executive Committee meeting minutes are in volumes in subseries 2; however, the earlier minutes of this committee were not bound and are stored in Series 3.

Numbering of the volumes intermingles WCE general administration volumes with BLM volumes, but each volume is labeled correctly in the "List of contents of this collection."

Series 2. BLM incoming letters, etc. (box 1-6, 1890-1904):

This series mostly contains incoming letters to the WCE's Board of Lady Managers, usually addressed to Bertha H. Palmer, president of the BLM. However, one folder of outgoing original letters by Mrs. Palmer is present and 4 folders of meeting minutes.

Most of the incoming letters are not represented by replies in the president's letterbooks in Series 1.

Includes eleven letters by Daniel H. Burnham: 1891 Jan. 19, 24, Mar. 26, Jun. 15, Jul. 14, Dec. 26; 1892 Aug. 27, Oct. 5, 12, 18; 1893 Jun. 30.

Includes many letters by Ellen Henrotin (see the indexes); includes 2 letters by Harriet Monroe: 1891 Nov. 28, and undated; includes 5 letters by James W. Scott: 1891, Aug. 10, 29, 29, 31, and Dec. 12; includes 3 letters by Florenz Ziegfeld, Sr.,: 1892 Nov. 3, 8, and 1893 Jan. 13.

This series includes a later accession (1991.0485) that contains letters about participation of foreign nations in the work of the Board of Lady Managers.

Series 3. Miscellaneous materials relating to the WCE:

This series contains a variety of materials.  There is a folder of items issued by the WCE to individuals that later were donated to this collection. These include stock certificates, invitations, a few letters and lists about arrangements for exhibitions, etc. at the fair, and other miscellaneous information. For example, this folder contains a stock certificate issued to Mrs. Lucy J. Rowe for fifty shares of capital stock of ten dollars each. Signed by H.N. Higinbotham, president, and H.O. Edmonds, Secretary.

There also is a folder containing account sheets for the WCE's Dept. of Photography.

The early meeting minutes of the World's Columbian Exposition's Executive Committee are in Series 3, whereas the later minutes of this committee are bound in volumes in Series 1, subseries 2.
