Provenance statement: Wilkinson retired to Mexico, and his daughter married a Mexican. Many years later, her son L. Bigot brought this collection to New York City to sell. Chicago Historical Society purchased the collection from the manuscript dealer Walter R. Benjamin in 1893. An addition to the collection consisting of Wilkinson's 1799 report on western trade was purchased in 1971 (M1971.0002).

Summary description of the collection:

Incoming correspondence and some items written by Wilkinson, transcriptions of talks with Native American chiefs, instructions to commissioners authorized to make treaties with American Indian tribes, and copies of proclamations issued by James Wilkinson. Correspondents include Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, Henry Knox, Oliver Wolcott, Jonathan Dayton, Timothy Pickering, James McHenry, Gen. Henry Dearborn, William C.C. Claiborne; the Marquis of Casa Calvo, the Spanish commandant at Pensacola; Col. John Francis Hamtramck, and August Chouteau. Topics include U.S. Army policies, the 1793 court martial of John Armstrong, Wilkinson's activities and army affairs in Louisiana (1800-1806, 1809), the Aaron Burr Conspiracy trial (1807) and the inquiry into Wilkinson's conduct, the War of 1812, and Wilkinson's trial and recall.

 

Items were arranged chronologically, with undated items at the end, and mounted in 4 volumes.

 

Mostly in English, but a few items written in French and a few in Spanish.
